Nikolai Petrov was one of the titans of the keyboard.

He wasn't on best terms with the Soviet regime and
was not allowed to tour outside Russia as often as
Richter, Berman, Gilels or Ashkenazy. Every one of
his surviving recordings redefine perfection. Listen

Petrov wond the silver at the first Van Cliburn Piano
Rodeo in 1962. The gold went to Ralph Vota .... who ?!?

IMHO this was the worst scandal in the history of
piano competitions. Totally rigged to demonstrate
the superiority of the American piano "school".

He won silver in Brussels in 1964. Gold went to Moguilevsky.

I know. I heard them both when they stopped in my village.
IMHO Petrov is/was the greater artist. Moguilevsky is/was
more conventional in the Russian piano school tradition --
not a bad thing in itself, but lowers my interest. Petrov is
perfect beyond imagineation in everything he touched.
