I have been seeing a lot of twofers and even a few individual releases claiming to be complete sets of the Bach violin concertos, but only include the #1 and #2. I understand the reasoning behind this, but I think BWV 1043 deserves to be part of any great cycle, 1060 is also a nice bonus (but not necessary) when done with a violin. I have only a couple that are OK, but wanted to seek advice from others who have collections.

The Naxos disc of Bach's orchestral works from Helmut Muller-Bruhl and the Cologne Chamber orchestra includes BWV 1041-1043 and BWV 1052, the latter being the reconstructed original of what was published as a concerto for three harpsichords. BWV 1060, reconstructed, as it usually is, for oboe and violin, appears on the same company's recording of oboe concertos. Tempi are brisk and the young soloists sound fine to me.

I know (and have ) 3 more or less "complete" cycles, all on 2 disks.

- Podger on Channel Classics SACDs with:
BWV 1041, 1042, 1043, 1044, 1055, 1056, 1060R and 1064R.

- Wallfisch on Virgin with:
BWV 1041, 1042, 1043, 1044, 1052, 1056, 1060 and 1064

- Faust on harmonia mundi with:
BWV 1041, 1042, 1043, 1052R, 1056R, 1060R, with some extras: 3
Sinfonias, 3 Trio sonatas, Overture #2 BWV 1067

I did not compare them. But after sampling I'ld say: the choice is
between Faust and Podger.

That must be the one that's part of Naxos' complete Bach orchestral works collection, if so, I have one of the Brandenburgs by Muller-Bruhl and I agree with your assessment. Tempi is swift but not too fast, and the sound is good. I will have to seek out the rest of that collection since it seems available cheaply for the whole box set including the violin concerti. A lot of people love the Suzuki on BIS, but I've had a tough time fully coming around to it. It has 1041-1043 and 1060. Thanks for the suggestion.

Best, Benjamin R.

Haven't heard of the Podger or Faust, I like Faust so I may have to find that one. Seems like a good collection. Thanks for the tip.
