Stating the obvious, I don't think there is really a market for classical vinyl in the same way there is for reissues of popular music. Or at least if there is, the classical vinyl lovers are too busy just getting the real deal in the form of used LPs instead of paying premium for reissues or new releases. We're the ones who are still buying CDs, for the most part. I see, for instance that Abbado's BPO Mahler 5 is about to get an LP release from DG. That would be really cool to own if it was $6, but at $30+ I'll take any used CD first and look for better bargains.

Didn't the SFSO put out a special vinyl set of MTT's Mahler symphonies
way back when he recorded them? Wonder how that sold...

-Owen

P.S. Wonder if they were set up for a "record changer" sequence, or if
you had to keep flipping sides to get the right order.

Oh, wouldn't I also love to know how that SFSO Mahler LP set. But that sort
of information seems to be more closely guarded than White House confidential
documents.

If I recall, Universal also have tried some super-expensive LP sets.

I suspect that anyone buying them are doing it as a speculative investment
they hope will be featured on Antiques Roadshow a few decades from
now.

Jerry, why does everybody, um, dislike MTT? Is he some sort of American-born Sir Simon Rattle? Could he be Sir Simon in a different wig? Yes, I agree with you about vinyl, and not just for classical music. In sixty years time, salesmen at audiophile exhibitions will be putting Taylor Swift LPs/EPs/SPs onto the 'beautifully crafted' turntables of their hyper-expensive systems, inviting potential buyers to actually hear the difference between the cerise, mauve and aqua versions of the same song.

I must confess: I like MTT. Certainly, when he was at Boston, I
thought he was the best there. I enjoyed every concert I heard him
conduct. His Rite of Spring with the BSO is, I think, the best
performance I've heard.

Forgive me RMCR, for I have sinned. I will atone by listening to
Beecham and Guilini and Abbado, and swear off the hated MTT for all
time!

-Owen

P.S. It's easy to atone like this. I've done it thousands of times.

MTT is good at what he does, and that is generally not the central german rep. That's pretty much the bottom line, isn't it? In theory his Mahler is worthwhile, though I've never heard any of the SF stuff that really grabbed me. I did like the LSO 3 though.

I also appreciate early MTT in Boston especially his Tchaikovsky 1st Symphony, but also his Ives, Ruggles, Debussy, Piston, Prokofiev. Also a 1976 2 CD set of Ruggles recorded in Buffalo. His later recordings didn't affect me like these did.
