Piano rolls aren't a perfect reproducing medium, but they reveal some of the truth of what is being reproduced. Now if you find that the information they reproduce is not imperfect but outright false, you might have a case. Are you saying that?

Obviously one does not listen to piano
rolls with the same expectations as one
listens to modern recordings. One tries
to get some idea about the pianist's
conception of the work, his/her/its
phrasing, tempi, agogic, sense of
rhythm and what not. When one
looks at plates recovered from
archeological digs one does it
to understand how ancient
civilizations ate their meals,
rather than contemplating
how to use them to serve
day to day meals.

There are also plenty of modern
performances and recordings
completely devoid of touch,
tone, color, texture or phrasing.
