Hey,

When this franchise premiered – some 20 years ago – it was about street racing, auto hi-jacking, and other automotive crimes. This version has all of that morphed into some kind of government agency and fighting a hacker (Charlize Theron) bent on taking over the world. Even one of the Furious' mothers – Helen Mirren – shows up with advice, giving credence to Noah Cross' observation that “politicians, ugly buildings, and whores all get respectable if they last long enough.”

This series isn't feeding on respectability. It's money that fills the tanks of those muscle cars. These films easily make $200 million each and if truth be told, they are a lot of mindless fun. And many of them feature Michelle Rodriquez who I've been a fan of since Karyn Kusama's Girlfight in 2000.. So, I'm not taking one for the team by watching this stuff.

There is one scene where the hackers tap into every car in a major city and cars go cascading out of parking structures as waves from a waterfall. In another brilliant scene where the heroes are attacking a northern Russian naval base in winter to go after the bad guys out to steal a nuclear sub, they bring one quasi-military vehicle, several muscles cars and an orange Lamborghini. Can you even get snow tires for a Lambo?

There's a new entry in the series arriving this very minute somewhere near you.

To each their own, I guess.
