Back in `17 we discussed names fot things that people avoided
saying, specifically, "bear." Dorothy H lays it out:

https://groups.google.com/g/rec.arts.sf.written/c/ltC3tKY8h_0/m/5_udNAqkBgAJ

It turns out "wolf" is another, and there's a LoTR connection.

https://nautil.us/issue/81/maps/never-say-wolf?mc_cid=093dae2269&mc_eid=46cc4b336d

If that's behind a paywall, try this:

We laugh, but bears are becoming a suburban problem in some parts of
the country.

I've had my bird feeder destroyed by bears twice. But I'm more exurban than suburban.
After the second time, it stayed down.

That could also have been a Night Gallery short.

Oh, yes. I live 10 miles from the Sound, in the Naugatuck Valley.
The occasional brown one wanders down here. There's no
place to put Yogi when you catch him, zoos won't take him, and
the state doesn't allow hunting them. Two years ago a hiker was
attacked in Southbury, and that's just a 12 mile stroll down the
Housatonic from me.

Why not? I suspect that nothing is actually going to get done until a

Very interesting.
>
I'm just now seeing this (morning of May 12), because we returned
late last night from a weeklong visit to Walt Disney World
(celebrating Hal's and my 50th anniversary; our daughter got the
idea *five years ago* and spent the intervening researching,
planning, and saving, and sprung it on us in early March, would
we like go? how could we refuse?).

First and probably lasting impressions:

* Disney World is a cluster of oases of what we may generously
call civilization scattered here and there in forty square miles
of pretty much authentic North Floridian flora. (Disney Corp.
used a lot of aliases to buy up the land without anybody
realizing what they were doing. Lots of trees, lots of swamps,
lots of open water ranging from puddles to pools to largish
lakes. All open water, or approaches thereto, are flagged by
signs saying "DANGER! Alligators and snakes may be present!"

* We never saw a single alligator in the five days we were there.
Meg was disappointed.

* We did see some herons and some of what I will call ibises
till I can do some research and what they were. Blackbirds, a
few pigeons, some squirrels, and one brown rabbit. Plus a lot of
little lizards, maybe five inches long, slightly more than half
of it tail.

* Disney World contains much too much Stuff to try to cover in
five days, particularly if one of you is in a wheelchair (I
sprained my big toe going down the stairs to begin the trip).

* It was very interesting and I want never to go back there.

* I also want never to fly again. Meg is talking about Disneyland
for Thanksgiving 2022, in which case we might drive or might take
the train. If Winnipeg gets the 2023 Worldcon, Hal talks about
taking Amtrak to the Canadian border and then taking Canadian
Rail across the plains. But no more planes, particularly when
one can barely walk and one's husband has to help one shuffle
across maybe five feet of floor to the restroom as the plane goes
bouncey-bounce.

*Yesterday morning we got up at 5 AM Eastern time (that's 2 AM
Pacific) in order to have breakfast in a fancy restaurant (there
was a lot of fancy restauranting, most of it yummy and bad for my
blood sugar), flew all day, got home at 11 PM.

Now on to the comments.

Did you get to see the 3 Little Pigs, and the....
.....hairy one who blows down houses? :)

I hope you get a nice rest from your excursion!
Congratulations on the Golden Anniversary.

No, we didn't. We spent two of our five days in the Magic
Kingdom (that's the locus of most of the original Disneyland
stuff), but I sat out most of the rides; I had injured both my
feet in as many days, I won't go into the gory details.

>I hope you get a nice rest from your excursion!

I'm working on it! Second day back in Vallejo, and my back has
*mostly* stopped aching from having bounced over deliberately
picturesquely bumpy walkways in a wheelchair.

>Congratulations on the Golden Anniversary.

Thanks! We're working on the second fifty years now.

And Meg's *FIVE YEARS* of research, planning, and downright
scheming paid off; everything went off without a hitch except for
unpredictables like me spraining my feet and several planes
taking off late and barely arriving in time for us to make our
connections. (We flew Oakland-Dallas-Orlando and
Orlando-CHICAGO-Oakland, for Cat's sake.)

Airlines don't exist for the convenience of the passengers.

They exist for ... come to think of it, I have no idea what they exist
for.

Perhaps they have no reason to exist at all.

They exist so that pilots can fly airplanes (and be paid to do so).
