As the proud originator(1) of the longest running thread on RMCR(2), and
inspired by the current thread about the GPOC, I thought it might be
interesting to find out what folks here would choose for an imaginary
"Great Recordings" volume of a favorite pianist.

For those familiar with the term, we could have a "Fantasy Baseball" of
music, or a "Virtual Competition", but with no strict rules about who to
include or how many works. (Except we might want to avoid personal
insults(3))

(1) I should probably insert a smiley
(2) The thread "Characteristic Recordings - Celibidache et. al." has
been going since October!! (Yes,I know..)
(3) Here is something Einstein might have said: "You Never Fail Until
You Stop Trying"

it's basically a solitary confinement thread.
gggg has got a couple of those too.

I'm guessing Kissin was too young to be accorded a GPOC?

Did Zoltan Kocsis have one?

Sure - I meant the mention of that thread in a humorous way - like my
use of the phrase "Distinguished Career", nothing I post here should be
taken seriously!

As for Kissin and Kocsis, my thought is that anyone could be included,
the only limitation being that just a few characteristic performances
would be mentioned. It would be interesting to see debates here about
the pianist's interpretations - and what makes them distinctive and
special...

I'd be very interested to hear what piano performances Herman would consider to be great - just for laughs.

No need for that, we've got this thread Notsure alluded to, in which you momentously change your views about Mozart every day, as if anyone cares - a futile attempt at sounding like a connoisseur.

And "connoisseur" is a phony concept anyway, as the Hatto debacle demonstrated.

Also, I don't have this piano fetish.

One delight in the set is Michelangeli’s performance of Gaspard de La Nuit . The surprise is in the outstanding sound quality. Consider that none of the various Gaspards from ABM are studio recordings. They are radio broadcasts or pirates.

A frustration for me is that the greatest of all Gaspards IMO is from a 1968 Carnegie Hall recital by Michelangeli (it’s on YouTube). It is, however clearly recorded by someone in the audience, and therefore not in very good sound. That entire recital is on a transcendental level, by the way.

I'm not trying to sound like a connoisseur, man - haha; I'm just trying to figure out which recordings I like best.

Seems as if you are the real connoisseur.

Me neither.

How about staying on topic for once dear Herman; let us know what you consider to be the Greatest Piano POC (this or the last), or "characteristic performances" as Notsure put it. You don't need to have a piano fetish for this.

I have a recording of her playing the Schumann sonata, on this disc -- I don't know if it's the same. It's certainly special.

The version I referred to was from 1951.
