In this day and age when there are so many tributes to G1 characters, it feels weird to be talking about the Beast Wars version of Sandstorm again.

https://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/first-look-at-transformers-generations-selects-sandstorm/46605/

For those who don't remember, he was one of the BotCon '99 exclusive toys, a redeco of the 1996 Scorponok toy. And this version looks approximately the same, though the color seems a bit off. He's a bit too tan and not really grey enough.

Man, I had an awkward relationship with that toy. I was so broke during the Beast Wars days, and yet I was determined to have a complete collection. It was important to me because of reasons. And then they started doing these expensive BotCon toys, and I was like, well, it's a Beast Wars toy so I've got to have it. I was already pinching pennies and eating a Snickers bar on my lunch break every day, because it was the cheapest thing in the vending machine that wasn't chewing gum. But, sure. Bring on the expensive convention toys.

I mean, Onyx Primal was easy for me to acquire. Fractyl and Packrat cost me like fifteen bucks. That was easily doable. And then at some point people started to notice the BotCon toys, I guess, and the pricing just skyrocketed. So, I owned Sandstorm for a while. I had him and Antagony and Windrazor. Couldn't open the packages, of course, because that would utterly destroy the resale value. And then at some point I asked myself, why the hell did I even own these things if I couldn't afford to ever touch them?

And then I had some kind of water damage scare in the storage shed, and realized I needed to unload these things before they were worth zero dollars. And that was the end of Sandstorm. I'm sure he's very happy somewhere, living his best life, still in the original package, and now being worth (checks eBay) about ten times what I sold him for.

I'll totally buy this version of him, though. I imagine we'll get a new Antagony, too, because what else can Hasbro do as an Inferno redeco?

Zob (kind of glad we're not getting tributes to the FOX! Kids toys, because those were hideous)

Some good thoughts and memories here, Zob!

I was never a fan of the BW BotCon exclusives, but I was (and, am) a huge Nightracer fan. I remember feeling so lucky, back in 2005 or so, to track down a mint on card edition (one that even had Raksha's hand-applied blue racing stripe details) for the princely sum of $50 at a used toystore here in Vancouver. (Back then, I'd just graduated university, so it was a lot of money).

Did I open it? Of course. Do I still play with it now? Of course. Do I know the resale value has increased by hundreds of percent? Yes, but life is short, and enjoying stuff while you can is what matters to me now.

(I'll be opening my Zhong Jin Astrotrain and MP Blackarachnia soon, too!)

JB

Sandstorm is one of 4 Botcon toys I couldn't afford at actual Botcon, so I watched all the other attendees open their toys while I sat there with no toy like a chump for 1999 and 2000. Finally in 2001 I could afford toys, and again in 2002. I still have Cyclonus unopened but he's not a very popular Botcon toy, and I opened my Blackarachnia based Arcee and Ravage based Tigatron and I don't regret opening them, and I likely would have opened Sandstorm like I did CatScan, who I totally regret opening.
