Returning from a late gathering, an Iranian couple with their small
child check into an unusual hotel. The (mostly) Iranian horror-flick
THE NIGHT brings the cinematic panache we now expect of that country's
offerings. Unfortunately, it has a limited grasp of (or indifference
to) what U.S. viewers find scary and satisfying. Minimally recommended.

Okay, but bear in mind that I, too, am something of an Iranophile...

Speaking of such movies, did you see this, Tobe Hooper's last
directorial effort:

No. And the IMDb page seems to favor a 5th rewatch of 'Salem's Lot'...

Which is a strength and not a weakness since US horror fans are mostly juvenile morons. The worst thing that ever happened to horror movies in the US is the so-called Horror Community who have created a standard of mediocrity that is stultifying. This isn't a great film but where it might get lost is in a place that is beyond the brain dead borders of "US viewers."

Popcorn horror movies have been poorly written on average at least since
the 1950's. And that applies globally. Nothing new here.

How glib. I would think that what I wrote went over your head although there's a better chance that it went straight through the emptiness of your skull. You missed the point but doncha always?

As much as I appreciated this flick's style (which was indeed well above
US standards, as is most of the horror I actively like), I couldn't
escape the sense that what it thought were telling blows to the viewer's
psyche were missing their mark, maybe culturally. E.g., the woman's
horrifying "sin" just *had* to land more softly in NYC than in Tehran.

A little over the top but mostly accurate. In the U.S. horror's target
audience is teens and tweens.

So you were lying when you said you were an "Iranophile".

Iranian movies (that reach the U.S.) are a frequent delight ...and, on
the whole, considerably more grownup than U.S. stuff. But this one
didn't quite work ...and some of that may have been "mechanical".

Compared to some of the horror nonsense that you "solidly recommend"? Really? This is pretty typical of your reviews: If it isn't playing at the Quad, somehow it's just not up to snuff.

You'd have to name such a bit of "horror nonsense" for me to tell you
why I judged it worth a horror-fan's time. This one, I think, will
leave most people I'm talking to disappointed ...and that's detrimental.

The Iranian movies I've seen, and a knowledge of this one's content.

Oh, I forgot. Most of the people you're talking to -- and if you check the stats on this forum, that's about 7 people -- are mindless, juvenile, genre suckers. We've been down this road before and basically you're a white boy who posts mealy mouthed, spoilless blurbs about the same old shit.

The vast majority of Iranian movies I know of aren't horror, so I'm
mystified why you're unable to name even a single comparable horror film.

Comparable because it's Iranian? Look, I made my recommendation. If
you doubt me, or are feeling adventurous, then by all means watch.

I'm mainly about *my* reaction to a movie, and being "wrong" in that
regard is almost undefined (...unless, e.g., I've flat-out missed

in the middle as well as at the end. I'm glad you fared better. Maybe
others will, too.

Re some other specific movie... fwiw, I'm often a little put-out by "X
meets Y" descriptions. For one thing, they usually constitute
substantial spoilers, and, for another, they seem to devalue the basic
