This crazy idea popped into my head and I can't get it out. So I thought
I'd share it and see what you guys think.

WHAT IF Hasbro had not made the radical brand shift by making
Transformers: The Movie and the timeskip to the 21st century?
WHAT IF they had made a more conventional 1986 lineup and "safe" season
3 of the cartoon?

So those characters created for the movie would not exist. Let's focus
on characters that didn't get the spotlight that they should have and
also the straggling Diaclone and Microchange toys that Hasbro didn't adopt.

The Powered Convoy (Delta Magnus) would be presented as an updated form
of Optimus Prime.

The 1986 Minibots would be the same, except swap in Bumper for Wheelie.

Let's give the Omnibots a retail release and cartoon appearance. They
were cool.

The Autobot Cars would be Tigertrack, Spinout, Cordon, Road Rage, Deep
Cover, Clampdown, Lift Ticket, Blue Bluestreak, and Exhaust (he would
have been placed as an Autobot in 1986.)

The Decepticons would have the "Kiloton" 44 Magnum, the "Skyklik" Triple
Changer, the "Eggbot" Metal Men, Dialman, Magnaman, Scopeman, and Beam
Robo. Maybe Magnificus too.

If I had the ability to draw what I had in my head, I'd make a mockup
alt-1986 toy "catalogue". I'd also like to animate an imagined TV ad for
alt-Season 3, or maybe an opening credits.

I agree with a lot of your Diaclone and Microman choices. There also might have been a lot more toys licensed from Bandai and other toy companies, though of course they wouldn't have appeared in the animated series.

If Optimus Prime got an upgrade in the form of Powered Convoy, would Megatron get an upgrade as well? The 44 Magnu Gun Robo wouldn't have made a bad new form for Megatron.

We might have seen Kronoform type robots in the show. We could have seen the Microchange cassettes that turned into helicopters and things. Maybe Hasbro would have brought over the Blockman toys by Takara to compete with the Centurions toys by Kenner. Maybe Hasbro would have sold the Trainbots. I'm sure there were some aborted Diaclone concepts that we've never seen, either.

We still would have gotten toys like Metroplex and all the Scramble City designs, regardless. They would have just been established as present-day characters. It's likely Trypticon would still have been designed as a foil for Metroplex. Did ToyBox produce any additional motorized mecha besides Omega Supreme?

Maybe Hasbro would have licensed the Godmars combiner from Bandai, since Mighty Orbots ended up not being a toy line. That would have made an awesome Transformers toy.

Zob (so many possibilities!)

I'd love to know that. There doesn't seem to be any info on ToyBox. Was
it its own company that got bought out by Tomy, or were they always a
division of Tomy?

Shockwave's maker ToyCo is also a mystery. But they still seem to exist.

Really cool idea, Zob! On all fronts.

Question: by "created for the movie", do you just mean characters that were explicit outgrowths of the movie (namely, Cyclonus, Scourge, the Sweeps, et al?) Or also those that are simply products of the era? (The Predacons, SkyLynx, etc.?) Would the latter have a place in this scenario?

Again, great thought experiment.

Yes, the former. The latter would have a place.
