Thanks for the tip. I just came back from the concert.

It was fabulous! Everything perfect. As good as piano
playing can possibly get on a Stoneway. I wish he could
have played on a Fazioli or on a Bosie, but this was a
Stoneway event. The instrument provided by the SJ
Steinway Society was decent for San Jose, however
not as good or as well tuned as the one he played 4
years ago in San Francisco.

The livestream is available for a couple of days.
Very highly recommended if one can afford it.

I heard the same recital in London last night and was disappointed. But to start of on a positive note, he can play loud and the sound he made is beautiful - bell like and singing. And he is a virtuoso. Most of all he is impressively authoritative - it’s like, he knows exactly what he wants and he knows how to make his piano deliver it.

The Busoni was fine. The Fantasy was just lacking in humanity and feeling, the Etwas Bewegter passage in the second movement was totally lost. The Tombeau was rather nice. The first movement of the Prokofiev was jaw droppingly virtuosic, the second movement certainly did not make time stand still - and by now I was starting to think that this piano playing is empty swaggering. By the end he’d even lost the beautiful tone - just annoying loud bluster.

Packed hall, lots of people below 30 and many well below, they cheered their heads off at the end. I beat a hasty retreat to the pub to avoid the inevitable encore.

Yet you were disappointed... So, all the positive things you said don't matter in the end.

Imagine yourself opening up to your heartthrob and then getting a response like "Yeah, you have many positive traits, but I just don't like you"...

I don't like Grosvenor as well from what I heard, just a little Mozart and Bach, which both left me completely unimpressed, and I don't feel like he is going to be a significant musician in any way in the future...

On another note: Howie... if you can't find anything wrong with minors performing nude in an opera there is seriously something wrong with you as well.... this is some crazy shit honestly Howie... and yes, our values are just very far apart here... you know Howie... this really is not a case of "De gustibus", but a clear case of "you need to reflect a little on the shit you are thinking"... I don't think that you are a pedophile... but this world is not as innocent as you like to believe Howie... not everyone is as nice as you (if you are that is)... you really need to get in touch with reality.... sexual exploitation of minors is not good in any way... this can be traumatic for some kids...

They won't be nude: "La Monnaie will provide them with flesh-colored
underwear to imitate naked bodies." And they may not be minors, they
have to be 16 years old, but whether that is considered a minor in
Brussels is unknown to me.

The headline was from LeBrecht, whose score on accurate reportage is not high.

Of course, you might want to ask why someone would feel the need to
"imitate naked bodies" at all, with the opera world previously shaken
by several sexual assault scandals, i.e. Domingo, James Levine, etc.

You seem to misunderstand that Mandryka was disappointed that they would be performing in flesh-colored underwear and not nude - which i find a bit creepy... read the full thread...

In some cases such things (performing in flesh colored underwear) might be appropriate - can't think of one though; but certainly not wrt 16yos...

I should also add that pedophile in this case is the wrong term... because that would indicate a sexual interest in children (meaning persons that have not reached puberty yet; which ofc is not the case here).

Furthermore - as pointed out below - I consider flesh-colored underwear for 16yos (I mean honestly even for 18yos and young adults...) a bit of a creepy idea... I mean maybe 25+ or sth... I don't know...
