The "two-bit Luke Skywalker" would be Rey in the supposed Star Wars
Sequel Trilogy by the talentless hack JarJar Abrams ... which in
reality was just a lazy gender-swapped remake of the originals.

The Dune novels (some of them anyway) were of course written before
Star Wars and were some influence on George Lucas, but the Hollyweird
adaptations have always been simply an attempt to jump on the Star Wars
band wagon, just like Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers were.

I never liked Herbert's stuff, it bored me. But the original "Dune" was at least
weird enough to come off as a scifi/fantasy, even if using Sting in the one role
was nearly as bad as Travolta in "Battlefield Earth."

Dune in all it's guises is boring rubbish.

I chose one of the original novels as a school prizegiving award (the
options were extremely limited and it was the only sci-fi book). I gave
up attempting to read before the end of the first chapter, after pages
and pages of desciptions of sand on a sand planet. Unfortunately people
thought because it's sci-fi and I had one, they kept buying me more
books in the series as gifts - I've never bothered to even open those
books and it's not a complete set.

The first one was great, the second one was awful. After that it got
better for a while, but I was still behind when Herbert died, so I never
went on from 4 or maybe 5 because I knew the series wouldn't have a proper
ending.

There was a good series of posts on Usenet a while back pointing out
that a lot of what Herbert was doing was subverting the standard hero
story, which I had never really considered.

Personally, I'd rather wait until seeing something until forming any
judgement.

Although I can declare that I'll miss the baroque furnishings & fittings
from the David Lynch version.

Not quite, but that was a weak spot in the book. Evolution would have had
the worm joints overlapping the other way to what Herbert did. A very minor
point though in one of the great Ripping Yarns.

You have things a bit backwards: Tatooine is a bit of a two-bit Arrakis,
considering that Frank Herbert's book came out in 1965, twelve years
before the first Star Wars film.

I actually just yesterday saw Villeneuve's Dune (part one) film, and it
was pretty much as good an adaptation of around half of this thick book
as can be expected. Hopefully it'll achieve similar cult following as
Jackson's LoTR movies — I'm looking forward to seeing a continuation.

Not a snowball's chance on the Sun that Dune will ever get close to
being as popular as Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, etc.

Lynch's Dune already has a certain cult reputation in spite of its flaws.

Pretty much anythings has a "cult following" if you define it as "a few
devoted nutters", but the original post said "Lord of the Rings" and
there's simply no way "Dune" garbage will never reach those heights of
popularity ... it won't even reach the levels of shows like "Firefly"
and "Babylon 5".

Ah, the McDonald's argument, that never gets old.

I'll see your weak popularity argument and raise you one Denis
Villeneuve is far and away the best director in any movies mentioned.

They're A-RABS! The planet is like Afghanistan. Imagine trying to EAT there. everything would be covered with sand. A planet of dope-addicts. The effects are good, the devices clever, the costumes are a hodgepodge of WW1 uniforms, Muslim dress and Star Warish battle dress. Tiny, dragonfly like drone weapons.

Good movie, not boring, BETTER than the 1980's version but it ends abruptly Probably going to make a sequel.
