I actually like Szigeti. The main problem is
that most of his recordings have terrible
sound quality.

The cluster of violinists I do not like are
the "smooth fiddlers", e.g. Grumiaux,
Ferras, Heifetz, etc.. or the whiny
meowy ones, like Hadelich.

I also do not like fiddlers who have a
nasal timbre, e.g. La Mutter. To my
ears, the golden standards are
Szeryng, Milstein, Haendel,
the J-band and the K-band.

I heard Kogan live many years ago. I
didn't like it at the time. Kogan has a
somewhat nasal timbre which does
not resonate with my ears. I should
listen again and see if a recording
sounds better to my current pair of
ears.

There is a scientific way to tell.

First, separate the factors. Test Mr. Tetzlaff
and the orchestra separately in the same hall.

Vary power levels and measure how the fiddler's
output changes as voltage increases. Connect
Mr. Tetzlaff to various DC and AC sources from
0V to 240V in 12V steps. Measure and record
the ouput. Repeat the same steps with the
conductor and the orchestra. Voilà!

My favorite is Campoli on Decca, but unfortunately the original costs over 1k. It is one of Decca's best, as is Campoli's Tchaikovsky or Oistrakh's Scottish Fantasia. Same level.

Joan Field on Telefunken is very good. On digital, Heifetz is my favorite.

It's a great recording by Campoli. My favorite is Midori/Jansons/Berliner.
