Respighi: Antiche Danze ed Arie per Liuto
Münchner Rundfunkorchester, conducted by Henry Raudales (CPO)

Recently BIS released a new recording of these pieces with Neschling. Some very positive reviews, some less positive ("undercharacterized, no match for Raudales"). I listened to snippets of a few recordings on the net. And indeed: Raudales' recording has more life and sparkle, it is delightful. Compared to him Neschling sounds sluggish. I had once the LPs with recordings by Dorati (which I've never liked - stiff) and Ozawa (fine). This is finer.
Very good sound.
(BTW Marriner's recording on EMI/Brilliant Classics is almost as fine.)

New release from Bastille Musique -- & WDR Sinfonieorchester, one
of their frequent groups -- devoted to Gerard Grisey (1946-1998):

https://wdrsinfonieorchester.bandcamp.com/album/g-rard-grisey-d-rives

I'd say Grisey is probably named second most often among French
spectral music composers, after Murail. Personally, I got more
into the "outsider" spectralists, Scelsi (the term applied to him
only retroactively...) & Tenney, and have been less taken by the
French school per se. (Although e.g. Steve Lehman is a student of
Murail....) Murail in particular has reminded me of an impressionist
composer -- not that that's a bad thing, but his music hasn't really
excited me either. And for those unclear, "spectral music" refers
to the harmonic spectrum, so (in the case of Murail or Scelsi)
quarter tones as well, i.e. moving beyond equal temperament. (E.g.
Tenney wrote entirely for pure intervals, though, not logarhithmic
ratios.) It can be quite pretty & naturalistic, although it can
sound unfamiliar to those thoroughly accustomed to 12tet. In fact,
I think it's very well-suited to impressionism in general... e.g.
the quarter tones of Murail, in their closer approximations of pure
ratios, being akin to a sort of visual pointillism.... (Some might
say, of course, that spectral music is far more "natural" than 12tet
music could ever be....)

Anyway, I'd yet to hear anything really grab me from Grisey, but
this WDR release includes two of his most famous pieces, plus a lot
of discussion, that I haven't read yet.... Seems like a significant
release for this composer, who offers e.g. a lot of dark colors &
a flair for drama....

Also, the label itself has a variety of interesting releases, this
being #24. Just a few months ago, #23 was devoted to Xenakis (who
happened to be mentioned here recently...), featuring a new reading
of his iconic _Eonta_, plus less familiar works, e.g. _Khal Perr_
for brass quintet & 2 percussionists, which I don't really remember
hearing.... In fact, I first learned of the label here on RMCR,
with #11, Berio _Chemins_ (which is surely one of the most illuminating
releases for that composer as well).... They also have albums
devoted e.g. to Bach & Beethoven. Plus the improvised _SDLW_ that
I reviewed on my site this past January....

Indeed, the included discussion dutifully notes the ending to
Grisey's _Derives_ (1973/74) as "a transcendent conclusion like a
sunrise on the water."

I don't know that the music is making a particularly strong impression,
although I'm intending to spend some more time with it....

My only encounter with Grisey is the Espaces Acoustiques.
I found the music engaging but probably not of enduring interest.

Vagn Holmboe's 13 symphonies are new to me. After a little sampling I
picked up the BIS CD of 6 and 7, wih Owain Arwel Hughes conducting the
Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. The music grows on me, especially #6.
Any particular favorites among his symphonies or other works?

I've also been continuing to enjoy this recent New World Records
album of music by Brian Baumbusch (b.1987):

https://www.newworldrecords.org/products/brian-baumbusch-chemistry-for-gamelan-and-string-quartet

I was completely unfamiliar with Baumbusch prior to noticing this
release, but he's a US composer working with Balinese gamelan. In
fact -- perhaps pace some qualifiers/specifics -- he's apparently
the first US composer to have his music played by an actual village
ensemble in Bali. Of course, US composers writing for gamelan goes
back some decades, perhaps most prominently with Lou Harrison....
(Baumbusch's style also specifically evokes Nancarrow.)

Anyway, that album -- and I really don't know why New World shows
a propensity to come up with titles for their albums that are
different from any work by the composer (which is so opposite from
so much of the free improv ethos, where they can be reluctant to
include any words...) -- includes a cycle for gamelan, a 3-movement
work for string quartet (by/for the famous JACK Quartet), and then
a 3-movement work for the two forces together. I found the
quartet-only piece the least compelling, but am feeling like Baumbusch
has really got something with the fusion piece....

Al, I acquired most of the Holmboe symphonies when they were fairly new and
being praised
by most reviewers in the American Record Guide, Fanfare, and Gramophone.
For me,
most of them have not held up well. His procedure of constant metamorphosis
tends to
hide the shallowness of his material in the first half-dozen hearings.
Then, this
listener begins to experience Holmboe fatigue. YMMV.

Several years ago, I posted my opinion here and there a number of responses
you
might find interesting to read.

These do seem like the 3 most significant releases for Grisey: _Les
espaces acoustiques_ on Kairos double CD, _Vortex temporum_ on
Stradivarius, and the new release I mentioned, _Derives_ from
Bastille Musique.

_Les espaces acoustiques_ would seem to present the "backbone" of
his style, so to speak, moving from solo (viola) to large orchestra
(& choir). That's a series of pieces from the mid-70s to early-80s
unified into a cycle.... The Stradivarius album (under Tito
Ceccherini) includes the later (title) cycle, one of his last pieces
from the mid-90s, for instrumental sextet. The shorter work is
duplicated from _Les espaces acoustiques_. And then _Derives_ is
an earlier work, more transparently (perhaps?) setting the scene
for the later cycles. That album then includes an even earlier
piece, as well as the late double vocal & orchestra work _L'icone
paradoxale_, said to be one of Grisey's most personal. (Vaguely
Scriabin-esque in the latter case?)

As noted, I hadn't really spent much time on Grisey before, although
I'd heard a bit, and he was a "name" to me.... I do hear the
influence of his music though in later music, including improv.
Maybe that's because what he was doing is the sort of thing "everyone"
came to want to do with spectral counterpoint, including in
improvisation, or maybe it's because they're following him. Or
probably some of both. Besides the fact that he was innovating
these techniques, and the discussions mention especially about
innovating the notation for the various overtones, the music in
many ways sounds like of it's decade, i.e. 70s, 80s, 90s.... (And
then Grisey died 25 years ago.)

Just to complete the circle here, in case anyone is actually wanting
to follow, a couple of examples (both duos from musicians based in
the US), among those released today:

https://erinrogers-alecgoldfarb.bandcamp.com/album/earths-precisions
https://triptickstapes.bandcamp.com/album/pianissimo-etc

Finally, I also failed initially to notice that there are two quality
recordings available (at least as downloads) of Grisey's final
composition, _Quatre chants_, and those recordings should certainly
be noted as well.

Thanks -- when I listened to Grisey, I speculated about a few of his possible precursors, without being aware of anyone whom he, in turn, might have influenced.

To be clear, I'm not sure to what extent various performers-composers
today are influenced by Grisey personally versus being a part of
the same wave of musical ideas, of which he was one of the earlier
voices... at least, institutional voices.

It was interesting to me to notice that the piano retains an important
role in his output until the end though, as I generally associate
"spectral music" with ditching the 12tet instruments (& maybe fixed
pitched instruments in general, although alternate tunings, e.g.
gamelan style, have been popular too...). However, Grisey seems
to set "acoustics" against 12tet at times, as sorts of poles. So
it's been another perspective for me, including on the continuing
use of piano today.

So a relatively recent (last year...) album by a trio including
piano, something I don't normally feature so much at my site, but
here treated particularly delicately, yielding a feeling of composite
timbre-instrument with alto sax & snare drum.... There's a light
& airy sense to this music around the piano (& its acoustcs), the
"spectral music" aspect being about matching overtones across
instruments -- & the sort of impressionistic feel.

New recording of Feldman's _Violin and String Quartet_ released
today by Another Timbre & Apartment House:

https://anothertimbre.bandcamp.com/album/violin-and-string-quartet

I may write more of a review at some point. Initial impressions
are very positive. This was "the" Feldman piece where I really
wanted a new reading....

New release from Clean Feed, Portugal's big post-jazz/rock/world
improv label:

https://cleanfeedrecords.bandcamp.com/album/playing-with-beethoven

A quartet of double bass, sax, accordion & turntables plays free
arrangements of Beethoven works.

Not exactly my thing, but fun for a change of pace....

Zlata Chochieva "Im Freien".
I enjoyed her Chopin Etudes and she has tempted me back to buying CDs
after a considerable interval.
Here, she plays a Bechstein in a very enjoyable recital featuring
Schumann, Ravel, Liszt. and Draeseke with "encores" of Bartok and
Schultz-Evier.

Seconded! Many youngsters stop being interesting after three or four CDs, Chochieva is clearly an exception.

Does 38 count as "youngster"?

Busoni Piano Concerto in C with Garrick Ohlsson, Christoph Dohnanyi, and
the Cleveland Orchestra. Busoni is a composer that I wasn’t familiar with
until now. Enjoying it so far!
