As noted, this is a review of the original version. The revised
edition is differnt in subtle ways, on purpose, to smooth over some
inconsistencies with how the magic system developed in later books.
If you only read this one, or the first trilogy, it doesn't matter.
if you continue with the other trilogies, the revised edition is
better.

(Note that as her writing style developed, it got a lot more . . .
ornate. A deep, abiding love of describing rituals becomes one of the
most notable features, especially in the Camber books. If you like
that sort of thing (I do), they're wonderful. If not, they're a real
yawner. Also, the Camber books do *not* have happy endings, if only
because the family trees in the very first book mandate that certain
people die at certain times. And the first Camber trilogy suffered
from her inability to fit the story - with all the long, loving
descriptions of those rituals - into the page count madated by the
contract. So the third book just . . . ends, abruptly, with "And
everybody dies.")

The first trilogy are classics. The writing style is a bit dated now,
not surprisingly (it being 50 years old), but they still hold up.
(James' whining about not enough female characters, essentially
complaining that book written in 1970 reflects the publishing
realities of 1970, nothwithstanding.)

You said:
[...] there are only two women of note in the book, one of whom is a
power-mad villain and the other a religious fanatic. I would have
thought that a woman writer would have broadened the female cast.

Wouldn't having two women of note in the cast represent a significant
broadening compared to most fantasy written in the late 1960s or early
1970s?

Always use apostrophe's and "quotation marks" properly.

Do you *really* expect James to judge a work published in 1970 by the
standards of 1970?
