Alexander Uninsky won the second Chopin competition in 1932 after a toss-up with Imre Ungar.

The competition gained fame for its distinguished jury, which included Arthur de Greef, Zbigniew Drzewiecki, Alfred Höhn, Juliusz Kaden-Bandrowski, Marguerite Long, Joseph Marx, Eugeniusz Morawski, Stanisław Niewiadomski, Zofia Rabcewicz, Maurice Ravel, Józef Śmidowicz, Karol Szymanowski, Magda Tagliaferro, Józef Turczyński, Adam Wieniawski, and Jerzy Żurawlew.

The other participants are unknown to me. The exceptions are Louis Kentner - Gyula [von] Károlyi - Kurt Engel - Maryla Jonas.

In my young days, Uninsky was quite popular. I vaguely remember a radio interview about a concert he would give that OT-ed in a discussion about the quality of frozen chicken in Dutch restaurants.

I often wondered why I seldom heard of him after the 1960s. He wasn't too bad a pianist in the 1950s:

There are plenty of Uninsky
recordings on YouTube.

I have no idea what YOU are
talking about. Uninsky moved
to the US before WWII. Why
would he want to move back
to Europe? Can you tell us
what fraction of European
pianists who moved to the
US went back to Europe?

There’s quite a lot of his stuff available now, thanks to Bibliothèque Nationale de France transfers, so I think it’s not really true that he’s a forgotten pianist. Fast Chopin! But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Anyway thanks for the thread because I’m listening to his waltzes with my breakfast.
