In 1973, at the age of 91, Stokowski conducted Elgar's 'Enigma Variations' for the last time in his life in a New Philharmonia concert in London's Royal Albert Hall. The following day, the Daily Telegraph's music critic Martin Cooper wrote a review headed "Stokowski's masterly 'Enigma Variations' in which he wrote that "this performance is certainly the finest I have ever heard." He went on to praise individual variations, such as the "brilliant rushing scales" of 'Troyte' and the "nobility and simplicity" of 'Nimrod.' Happily the performance was recorded, so others can now decide if they agree with Cooper's assessment ...
