It depends on the cave! Are catacombs also
included in the "cave" category? Garrison
Keillor's "Songs of the Cat" were famously
recorded inside Rome's catacombs, and
the sound is nothing short of spectacular.

Even baby steps are progress of a sort. But did any of them play
the cello?

Tortelier has a 20 CD box set on EMI / Warner, the Great
Recordings, incomplete?, how many CDs would it take
to make it complete?

Maisky has a 44 CD complete box on DG.

A recommendation for Sadlo/CPO/Neumann came up on a TV series called "The Pleasure Principal" of all places - a series shot in Odessa/Prague/Warsaw.

It's lyrical and avoids any kind of grandstanding, which is a big plus in my book. Some would find it underpowered but I enjoyed it. Sadlo was born in 1912 and died in 2003 at the age of 91. He would have been around 64 when he recorded this in 1976.

There are so many great ones! For duPre, I also find the live 1968 to be special (filmed from a concert held in tribute to the people of Czechoslovakia days after the Soviet Union invaded).
