Been thinking about this again this week, and am curious for thoughts from others, too.

Online TF fandom has been around for the better part of thirty years. This very newsgroup, as an example, came online on September 11, 1993, and, for many years, was the acknowledged centre and nexus of the fandom. Since then, there have been websites, fanzines, MUSHes, forums, conventions, blogs, and a whole host of other digital and in-person activity.

How did people remaining on ATT first encounter online TransFandom? What was your initial connection to this community? What do you remember about that period?

What do you think ATT's future holds?

Happy Friday, all,

Joseph

My first clear memory involves finding this newsgroup and reading a fanfic, "Cyclonus and Galvatron's Reunion". The bug bit me after that.

As for the future, I imagine this place will hang on for a while yet.

A few days after the newgroup message appeared in alt.config, Jameel al
Khafiz told me about it, and I added it to my feed. I can't recall if the
original TF MUSH launched before or after that, but it was pretty near in
time. More broadly, I reviewed the GIJoe issues that led up to G2 on
rec.arts.comics (maybe RAC.misc) a few months before a.t.t launched.

Dave Van Domelen, was not part of any pre-internet TF fandom, however.

I just remember feeling overwhelmed by all the new info I had found. I
was saving all the different FAQs and things and printing them out. It
was so long ago that I was still centered on print media.

Ha! Me, too, Travoltron. I still have a printed-out version of the TF Encyclopedia (curated by Stanley Lui) in my closet, in fact. :)
