Could this possibly be a reference to the famous book by Lynne
Truss?

Eats, Shoots, and Leaves introduces itself with a joke about a
talking panda. Said panda walks into a bar...

Has something to eat.
Discharges a firearm.
Departs.

When asked, on his way out, why he did this... he shows the
bartender a book about the natural habits of the panda. A
sentence, intended no doubt to convey the fact that pandas
normally eat bamboo shoots and bamboo leaves was written
with an error of punctuation:

The Panda: eats, shoots, and leaves.

Eats, Shoots, and Leaves: The zero-tolerance approach to
punctuation, by Lynne Truss.

Actually, I think I _did_ hear of that book, although I forgot about it soon
after; but given that the joke of the comic strip involves the title being
interpreted in two ways, I don't see why it couldn't have been referencing
_both_ works.

Now that I've looked up information about it, I think that at one point I
was even aware that it was about a woman who travelled across the world,
and discovered the power of eating in Italy, and that of prayer and love in
two other countries.

With a title like that, though, in the absence of other information, I think I
would have been likely to assume it was biographical, but about a country
music star.

Why? Well, it describes three very basic activities - and, as we know,
country music is sometimes represented as a basic musical form, requiring
only the use of the I, IV, and V chords as a basis - and a lyric representing
a well-known emotional situation accurately in the way it is commonly
experienced. (Harlan Howard's dictum: three chords and the truth.)

And, of course, rural America is conservative and devoutly religious.

You clearly know nothing about County and Western music (as with
all other subjects).

David Allen Coe said it best:

"Some folks say that it is the perfect country and western
song...... but it is not the perfect country and western song
because it doesn't say anything about being drunk, momma, prison,
trains, or trucks. So I sat down a wrote another verse and now I
think it is the perfect country and western song (David Allen Coe)

"I was drunk, the day my momma got out of prison
"So I went, to pick 'er up, in the rain
"But before I got to the station in my pickup truck
"She got runned over by a danged ol' train"

Jane (now James) Robinson wrote a country/western song once,
which began,

"Darlin', you have up and went
Away with some slick city gent,
And now I'm cryin' tears enough for two;
That's the fundamental reason
I've been snifflin' and sneezin',
Sittin' here pickin' my nose and thinkin' of you."

A few more verses ensued, which I have forgotten, and the final
verse ran,

"I've collected what I've picked
And it's enough to make you sick.
I've rolled it in a ball that's greenish-blue.
That little wad is all I've got;
It should be you, dear, but it'snot,
From sittin' here pickin' my nose and thinkin' of you."
