I have read this series several times and strongly recommend it. I find that volume three is a much better read if I skip over everything in italics. The least acceptable of the Gaia-stoff
is confined to this.

It's worth noting that in the first two books he has put some serious thought into the climate, and consulted with non-Lovelockian experts. As an ice-sheet modeler I have certain doubts, but that didn't affect my appreciation of a very finely told story.

I'd love to know how the ice box version of the world before the encounter
with the giant star managed large animals.

Stephen Baxter has experience writing wooly mammoths, no? Perhaps he
could be looped in to write the prequel.

when winter ends.
