"Diplomatic Immunity (Miles Vorkosigan Adventures)" by Lois McMaster Bujold
https://www.amazon.com/Diplomatic-Immunity-Miles-Vorkosigan-Adventures/dp/0743436121/

Book number fifteen (in chronological order) of an eighteen book space
opera series. However, some people call this a military science fiction
series. There are several other books and short stories in the
Vorkosigan Universe. This series won the Hugo and Nebula awards for
best series in 2017. Also, several of the individual books in the
series have either won awards or been nominated for awards. This book
was nominated for the 2003 Hugo and Nebula awards for best novel. This
is my second reading of this book. I reread the well printed and well
bound new MMPB published by Baen in 2003 that I just rebought on Amazon
(the fourth printing !). I have rebought the rest of the books in the
series in MMPB.

Imperial Auditor Miles Vorkosigan is on his long delayed honeymoon with
his wife Ekaterin before their two children are due to be decanted from
their uterine replicators. Nearing the end of their cruise to Earth and
back, a Barrayar Imperial Courier catches up with the space ship and
delivers an unwelcome message. His Imperial Majesty pleads that he
decamp into the courier and head at the highest speed to a 400 year old
space station in Quaddie space to rescue a Komarran trade fleet. Miles
and his wife do so, thus adding weeks to their journey home.

I don't know if it's bad form, but I wanted to write to concur with your rating.

I unabashedly love the Vorkosigan Saga in its entirety, though of course I
recognize that some books were better than others. This book, I thought, finally
gave us a good look at what Miles and Ekaterine were like as an established
married couple on an unexpected adventure, and showed excellent character
development (a feature that I love about the whole saga).

But I'm biased. Bujold is in my short list of top favorite authors.

Not bad form at all ! Note that I gave the previous book, A Civil
Campaign, six stars.

I don't, not any more. I loved it, but the torture scenes in
"Mirror Dance" rather put me off.

I skipped the torture scenes. And Lord Mark is totally off in the deep
end as far as PTSD.

I can agree with 6 out of 5 stars for A Civil Campaign. I am a little bit
concerned that Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen felt like a goodbye of sorts to
the saga, and I hope that's not the case. Though I could hardly fault Bujold for
wanting to focus on her other creations.

She has said more than once that she does not, at this time, have
any more stories to tell about those characters. But has not ruled
out the possiblity that something will occur to her in the future.

Mostly, she's been playing with the Penric series lately.

IIRC the Cordelia short set in the radioactive Vorkisogan land came
out after she said that, so maybe we'll still get the occasional
story. Hope so.

I think that's fair. I don't think those scenes were meant to be "enjoyed". They
were part of a redemption arc, of sorts, for Mark. He goes back to the worst
part of his past, in the most desperate time of his life, and ends up going
through horrors to come out (only somewhat) redeemed. Though in true Bujold
style, no victories are complete and uncomplicated.

But exploring those topics in that way is certainly not for everyone.

I have really enjoyed the Penric series as well, though it feels
a little less serious than the Vorkosigan saga. Very fun to read
though!

LMB. Officially. In reality, what she writes now, she self publishes
thruogh Amazon, etc. A lot of it (the Penric stuff) is too short for
a novel, and would be hard to sell anyway.

That is the drawback to the self-publishing process she uses. You
have to pay attention and order it when it's new, before
Subterranian runs out.

Amazon has an excellent print on demand service. Too bad she is not

I suspect she doesn't like the terms. Or just doesn't want to deal
with print any more than absolutely necessary, and Subterranean
handles the autographed copies she can't avoid pretty well.

Huh, I just looked. Subterranian does have the hardcover for $25. That
is a lot for a 100 page book.

I was pleased to learn about (and purchase) two Penric collections
that Baen put out in 2020 (Penric's Progress and Penric's Travels).
Each has 3 stories, and together they include all the Penric stuff she'd
(self-)published through 2017. Isfdb says she's (self-)published 4 more
Penric stories since then, but I don't know if Baen will collect&publish
those or not.

Thank you for mentioning this! You inspired me to go look, and I see that she
has written a new Penric & Desdemona book since I last looked. _The Assassins of
Thasalon_ has been released.

I now have plans for tonight. :)

As I said, keep an eye out for new works, and order right away when
they're release.

ABEBooks has at least one copy, but they want your left testicle
for it. (Probably signed, but still. $250?)

If enough people express interest, Subterranean will do reprints.
But it's got to be worth the trouble.

(Walmart shows it for $19. But is also out of stuck.)

It's up to her usual standards. Which are pretty high.

Bummer. LMB has a POD version of "The Mountains Of Mourning" out on Big
River. Too bad she does not have her other novellas on POD.
