Looks like it's not picking up any spam, which makes sense since the
spammers tend to use GG and this group can't be seen from GG due to the
fact that spamming complaints just get the group nuked there.

As long as there's a way to archive anything that doesn't get downloaded
in time, may I suggest moving back here from a.h.w-i? Or are too many of
the regulars the last few people in the world to insist on still getting
in via GG instead of a proper newsreader (or at least Thunderbird, which
the real client-snobs disapprove of but at least lets you crosspost in
the rare occasions that's a good thing)?

The takeaway from the nerfing at the beginning of the month is that
EVENTUALLY YOU *WILL* lose Google Groups access to UseNet entirely.

I'm told that even if you're only getting online via a library's
computer, there are now WEB-BASED newsreaders that don't need to be
actually installed on the hard drive.

This would be a VERY good time to consider getting involved with one--if
you have to start with a free rather than a paid Usenet SERVER to point
that newsreader to, that's not fully convenient, but several, like
Eternal-September, do have ways to get you posting permission.

Exactly what nerfing are you talking about here?

That's about as clear as I can make it.

But trying again:

Google Groups made severe changes that finally propagated to ABSOLUTELY
EVERYONE at the end of March.

These changes include stripping the ability to set a followup (very bad)
and to cross-post (I know, frowned upon anyway, but making it
_impossible_ is on another level).

At this point the only arguably-useful function of Google Groups is that
it still has an archive of any group IT HASN'T BANNED that goes back to
the group's founding--yes, this means there are 35-year-old messages
that you can dig up with the Search function.

And that's ARGUABLY useful, because ATM a.usage.english has a noob
digging around in 1999 and *replying to several of the articles*.

The thing is, though, there are now non-google Usenet archives again,
though the formatting on the one that I've upon occasion seen linked in
r.a.sf.written is not as pleasant on the eyes as Google's (for one
thing, I think you can't hide the header).

So even GG's one "advantage" isn't that great anymore.

And if you want to look back up there, "any group it hasn't banned"
should be in 40-foot-high neon.

As spammers continue to attack newsgroups (mainly VIA google groups),
the only response from Google is never to block the spammer's address,
nor to delete the spam, but rather eventually to BAN THE TARGETED
NEWSGROUP. That's why you can't get into s.h.w-i from Groups anymore.

The second part was me saying that I have no idea whether you can only
access internet from a library (and its own desktops, not even your own
laptop on the library network), but EVEN IF THAT IS TRUE, there exist
WEB-BASED "newsreader" sites that, usually for a fee, would allow you to
download headers to an account they keep ON THEIR SERVER and interact
with it as you would from PINE or from Thunderbird.

At that point, your only "excuse" to stay on GG is that you can't get an
account on an actual NEWS server, which is the server upon which ALL
articles are held that would SEND the headlines (and the bodies when you
fetch them) to your actual newsreader.

Yes, they're much rarer than they were in about 2003, but there seems to
be a MINOR backlash driving people BACK to Usenet now, and that means
they likely won't get much _more_ scarce any time soon.

Or did you think that you're posting to an actual Google-maintained
group and they just erased s.h.w-i from servers entirely?

And I should add that I, personally, CANNOT READ messages that are out
of Tree view and it seems that Google has moved to strict chronological
order instead lately.

I would be interested in learning more about non-Google Usenet
archives.

Quite apart from anything else, I'd be interested in finding out
whether I started on Usenet in April 1994 or somewhat earlier?

My memory of when I switched from the FidoNet echoes to Usenet is
somewhat vague but 04/1994 was the oldest I could find on SHWI before
Google nuked it.
