Its been a long time since I read Arthur C. Clarke’s
“Rendezvous with Rama” but from what I remember,
its mostly characters standing around gaping in awe
at the gee-wiz alien technology.

There are no Bad Guys, no chase scenes, fist fights,
etc. so like Asimov’s “Foundation” tv series, this movie
will bear little if any resemblance to the book.

I think I read the book years ago, but don't remember much about it
other than it being vaguely boring, although still much better than the
attrocious mess "2001: A Space Odyssey".

I know I played the "Rama" computer adventure game, which was
impossibly difficult, so I gave up on that (I still have the boxed copy
sitting on the bookshelf).

Go read the plot summary on Wikipedia. There's a bit more to it than
that.

It could be an interesting movie, but I'd think the biggest problem is
that it doesn't really have an ending. Rama arrives, a team is sent
to explore it, they never figure out who built it or why it came here,
and then it zips back out of the solar system.

There were three sequel books that tried to explain where Rama came
from and why, but Clarke didn't have much to do with them and they're
just awful.

Rama was kind of a book about paradise. After you've banished war & poverty,
and nobody cares about race or orientation, what do you *do*? Solve
fascinating intellectual puzzles, of course!

Yeah, this choice seems a bit odd. I can only guess it's an attempt
cash in on an audience who (as I do) adore 2001:aSO. To make it more
marketable, I think they'll have to make it unrecognizable.

Nope. "2001: A Space Oddyssey" is ancient and irrelevant these days
(not that it was ever relevant, thanks to being incredibly boring,
incredibly weird, and incredibly crap).

"Rama" is simply a cash-in on the current new productions -
"Foundation" TV series and the "Dune" movies. Some studio moron in
managment told his underlings to find another big name sci-fi writer's
"classic" book(s) to make into a movie, and "Rama" is what they came
back with. I wouldn't be surprised if they're half-hoping/planning to
make a series of movies using the other books, assuming this first one
is successful and the guy making it has time (the second "Avatar" movie
is only just about ready and we're still waiting for even any remote
hint about the 'planned' second "Tintin" movie!).

Then again, I thought Villeneuve's ARRIVAL was a bit of great SF,
even though the plot certainly was somewhat "difficult to market".
Let's just hope they don't end up filming the RAMA sequels,
they really weren't very good books.
