Indeed, and bees are cute.

The butter bugs were more like a cross between a cockroach and
a dung beetle.

The story line involving "bug butter" is that it is a tasty and
nutritious substance produced by bioengineered insects with the result
that Hilarity Ensues.

Bees are cute, butter bugs are not. Until, they are genetically
engineered to be cute.

Dorothy, you need to read the Vorkosigan series ! I would equate the
series to 17th ??? century Prussia in the hundred years war. In other
words, romance in a time of continuous strife set in a space opera.
Yes, there is military action but there is also one of the finest sets
of interesting characters developed in an SF/F book.

The very first book Lois McMaster Bujold wrote, "Shards Of Honor", is
the best of the entire series, published in 1986.
https://www.amazon.com/Shards-Honor-Vorkosigan-McMaster-Bujold/dp/1476781109/
and
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shards_of_Honor

Jo Walton even wrote a column about the book in 2009:
https://www.tor.com/2009/03/31/weeping-for-her-enemies-lois-mcmaster-bujolds-shards-of-honor/

The fourth book and the fourteenth book in the series are the next most
excellent books in the series. The fourth book won the Hugo award in
1992. The 14th was nominated for the Hugo award in 2000. The 14th book
has butter bugs running as a subplot where Miles is wooing Ekaterin.
Several subplots in that book.

I read the first few of them. Then I came across the one with
the genetically engineered cat blanket. I'd already encountered
some examples of squicky genetics in Bujold's work. Then someone
reviewed the next book, saying _inter alia_ "If you're a cat
person, when you encounter the word 'kitten,' close the book and
don't open it again."

So I didn't open it in the first place.

I know what the nasty is. The book is "Cetaganda". Yes, you would be
offended by the device that the author used to show how perverted the
Cetaganda society is.

But you can probably skip "Cetaganda" book and read.. Wait, skip "Ethan
of Athos" also if you do not want to read about a planet of men only.

The book "Cetaganda" has a kitten tree where the forefronts of the
kittens were genetically merged with a tree. When Ivan tried to remove
one of the kittens from the tree, the kitten font end came away from the
tree and it died. Horrifying. Miles and Ivan were horrified in the
book too.

IIRC, a bioengineered bacterial suite was involved as well.

I've read that one. Not particularly distressing, but not
something I'd want to read again.

Then I would jump to "Brothers In Arms". BIA through "Komarr" explains
the subplots in "A Civil Campaign". And they are great subplots
involving cloning, cryosleep, accidental death, imperial marriage, plots
to destroy the wormhole for Barrayar, etc.
