I don't know many conductors of Stokowski's generation conducted a work just once in their lives but he must be at the top of the list. For example, he conducted Nielsen's 2nd Symphony just once in Copenhagen in 1967 and the 6th in 1965 for a single BBC studio broadcast.

Both performances have just been reissued by CRQ Editions. His performance of "The Four Temperaments" had the Danish music critics reaching for their superlatives. However, the CRQ CD also has an interview in which Stokowski admits to not understanding the "Sinfonia Semplice" and saying he would like to conduct it more often. Even so, several critics have noted that despite some speedy tempos, his performance really holds the attention.

Here is the link to the CRQ Stokowski / Nielsen CD ...

Is there any reason do expect improved sound relative to the original releases on EMI (2nd) and BBC Legends (6th)?

Both those CDs were released over 20 years ago and both have long been deleted. I think CRQ's idea was to couple them together for anyone interested in Stokowski's Nielsen but who missed them the first time round. I should think the sound is as good as it was then but you can get an idea by clicking the link above for a preview.
