I read "The Twonky" in high school, as part of my unrecognized
quest to read every SF anthology in the high school library. It
haunted me for years, especially the paragraph in which Kerry
describes reading something in his area and not being able to
put the words together into a concept.

Although I was haunted by this, I didn't remember the title or
author(s), because my M.O. was simply "plow through one book,
check out another." I was probably in my forties before I
accidentally encountered it again. That bit still creeps me out.

I had just turned fifty when I encountered _Gladiator-At-Law_. At the
time that I read it, it struck me as a good metaphor for how the US
health care "system" worked: get your housing through your employer; if
you're unemployed, you're homeless.

Clever! (both of you) Not wanting to ignore local custom, I dare mention a couple
other collaborations that I've enjoyed:
Smith & Trowbridge - the Exordium series
Doyle & Macdonald - <lots of stuff>, but especially The Apocalypse Door, and most of
their Mageworlds stuff

And while this one actually turned out to be more of a plan B for me, I felt it should be
mentioned since it worked well for so many others:
Good Omens - Gaiman & Pratchett

Carpe diem!
Tony

Dare I say it: the tv series was better.

The series had two unfair advantages: Tennant and Sheen.

(Tennant was *born* to play a demon.)

With such pretty eyes.

His _Around the World in 80 Days_ is about to come out.

Getting back to _Good Omens_, the cast is (IIRC) now in Scotland
filming a sequel, script by Gaiman again, based on conversations
he and Pratchett had about writing a sequel, before Pratchett got
ill.

I also enjoyed the Exordium series but hadn't heard of Doyle & Macdonald
so have added _The Price of the Stars_ to the TBR list, thank you.

They're good, but not as good as the Exordium series in my opinion. They also
get a little...muddy? dragged out? along the way. I finished #5 The Long Hunt
a good while back, which I found to be better than #4 The Gathering Flame;
and while I'll surely read #6, it will probably be a while before I get to it.

I remember reading Gladiator-at-Law, and I felt one piece of grittiness in the book
should have been avoided: the protagonist's wife should not have been so cavalier
about the fate of her daughter.

Daughter was a teenager, IIRC. Perhaps mother was ready to put
up the sign that reads "I've got one nerve left and you're
getting on it."

Um, no. The rationale given in the book was that after being exiled to Belle Reve, she and
her husband had to concentrate on survival with the minimum of distractions, as the situation
was so dire.

I just felt that particular subplot/incident was... gratuitously shocking.
