But what preceded the Austrian Empire?

If, on the other hand, you are asking about a political union between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (established 1569) and the Austrian lands of the House of Habsburg, you may want to have a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_elections_in_Poland#List_of_elections and specifically those elections where one or more Habsburgs were candidates - i.e.

1. January 1573 - Archduke Ernest of Austria
2. August 1574 - Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor, Archduke Ernest of Austria and Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria
3. February 1587 - Maximilian III, Archduke of Austria, Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria, Archduke Matthias of Austria (future Holy Roman Emperor), Archduke Ernest of Austria - led to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_the_Polish_Succession_(1587-88) where Maximilian was one of the contenders. If that war had gone the other way, see https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/63/Polish-Lithuanian_Commonwealth_1582.PNG - the Habsburgs would have ruled an area stretching from the Swiss border in the west to present-day Estonia in the north to beyond the Dneiper in the east.

I meant the Hapsburg Austrian territorial possessions that preceded the Austrian Empire.

The "Hapsburg Realm" (Austria, Styria, Carinthia, Tyrol,
Moravia, Bohemia, and Silesia (until 1748)) was a collection
of fiefdoms within the Holy Roman Empire. Short of the
PLC being incorporated into the HRE, not political union
was possible. A "union of crowns" such as existed OTL between
"Austria" and Hungary, but not a political.
