"Invasion From Space (Perry Rhodan #4)" by Walter Ernsting and Kurt
Mahr, translated by Wendayne Ackerman
https://www.amazon.com/Invasion-Space-Perry-Rhodan-4/dp/1441659730/

Book number four of a series of one hundred and twenty-six space opera
books in English. The original German books, actually pamphlets, number
in the thousands. The English books mostly have two translated German
stories per book. The German books were written from 1961 to present
time, having sold two billion copies and even recently been rebooted. I
read the well printed and well bound book published by Ace in 1970 that
I had to be very careful with due to age. I bought an almost complete
box of Perry Rhodans a decade or two ago on ebay that I am finally
getting to since I lost my original Perry Rhodans in The Great Flood of
1989.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perry_Rhodan

In this alternate universe, USSF Major Perry Rhodan and his three fellow
astronauts blasted off in a three stage rocket to the Moon in 1971. The
first stage of the rocket was chemical, the second and third stages were
nuclear. After crashing on the Moon due to a strange radio
interference, they discover a massive crashed alien spaceship with an
aged male scientist (Khrest), a female commander (Thora), and a crew of 500.

The race of the wasp-like Mind Snatchers has heard the destroyed
Arkonide space cruiser distress signal. An extremely paranoid race,
they are trying to destroy the Earth with the humans on it. Part II of
the book is about Perry Rhodan's trip to the Moon to salvage more parts
from the Arkonide cruiser and the trip to Venus to establish a new base
of operations to backup the Earth operations. The book supposes that
the Venus atmosphere will be human breathable and the temperatures
bearable, alas, neither of these were found to be true by our Venus
probes since the book was written.

One has to remember that this book was written in German in 1961 and
translated to English in 1970. Many items that came about in the 1970s
and beyond such as cell phones are not reflected in the book. However,
commercial aircraft commonly traveling at Mach 3 are not available to
the public as talked about in the book. Niels Bohr's saying "Prediction
is very difficult, especially about the future" comes to mind.

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Amazon rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (3 reviews)

These reviews are great! You inspired me to get to work my PR reviews.
They'll be posted here in rasfw, albeit at a much slower pace.
After awhile Ackerman put an editorial in the front of each Ace. If
you happen to read those editorials along the way and spot some words of
wisdom about choosing the best chocolates in a box, please share it.
Apparently Ackerman got flamed when he skipped over some of the
Moewigs. „Nr. 31 Der Kaiser von New York“ was one such Moewig title
originally skipped. After Ace killed off its profitable PR franchise for
no good reason, Ackerman translated the Moewigs he originally skipped. A
Der Kaiser translation was released as "Robot Threat: New York" in
_Atlan 3_.
The list below dates from 2000 and its author is unknown. It
includes three additional Moewigs translated, for a total of one hundred
twenty-nine.

Cool. I had no idea that was the actual list. I used to have all of
the PR books, the Atlans, and the pamphlets. Now I just have the PR
books minus a couple. I need to inventory them and procure the books
that I am missing.

I am going to leave PR for a while and go back to some fantasy. I
suspect that it will take me a few years to work through my PR books.

Ah, the infamous Venus adventure. Actually, that is a few installments
later. Venus has been studiously avoided ever since and I think
the re-edited hardcover edition ("Silberbände") dropped those parts.

I doubt that Venus as a jungle planet was still scientifically
defensible by 1961, but in those dark times it took a number of
years for scientific advances to trickle through to popularizations,
which is what SF authors read, if they care at all. In 1954,
Isaac Asimov already portrayed the planet as an ocean world in
_Lucky Starr and the Oceans of Venus_. Of course that proved equally
mistaken.

For hundreds of volumes, the bridge crew on spaceships will still
read computer results from punched tape, well, "symbols" on tape.

As numerous commentators have summarized, people expected the
transportation revolution from the first half of the 20th century
to continue unabated, and completely failed to anticipate the
information revolution.

Not quite correct; the ones he skipped were published just right
*before* Ace shut down publication of the series; the last books
published were combos of the three "missing" PRs with the first three
stories of the "Atlan's youth" ("der Held von Arkon") cycle, followed by
the 4th/5th Atlan story, and then the In The Center of the Galaxy novel.

As usual, Perrypedia has the fairly definitive reference, at
https://www.perrypedia.de/wiki/Perry_Rhodan_englisch_(USA) , listing
all the PRs published, not just by Ace but by the (mostly abortive)
subsequent attempts to restablish publishing of PR in English:

1) Just after the end of the Ace deal, Wendayne Ackerman continued
self-publishing PR for a while as magazines similar in form-factor to
the German Hefte. This attempt covered PR stories from just after the
Ace PRs discontinued with PR #119 "Between the Galaxies" up thru
PR #137 "Phantom Fleet", stopping annoyingly 4 episodes before the end
of the Posbi storyline.

2) In 1997 John Foyt and Vector Enterprises started publishing PR
starting with the beginning of the Thoregon storyline (PR#1800 "Time
Lapse"). Alas, this attempt went under a few issues later.

3) In 2006 FanPro tried again with PR, this time choosing to translate
the Lemuria novels, a six-book auxilary novels set between PR#2199 and
PR#2200. Only one of the novels actually got published by them, but
all six novels were translated by Dwight Deckera and, after FanPro went
under, the rights to the translations reverted to VPM and they offered
them on Amazon as ebooks and they are still available:

Frank Borsch: Perry Rhodan Lemuria 1: Ark of the Stars
Hans Kniefel: Perry Rhodan Lemuria 2: The Sleeper of the Ages
Andreas Brandhorst: Perry Rhodan Lemuria 3: Exodus to the Stars
Leo Lukas: Perry Rhodan Lemuria 4: The First Immortal
Thomas Ziegler: Perry Rhodan Lemuria 5: The Last Day of Lemuria
Hubert Haensel: Perry Rhodan Lemuria 6: The Longest Night

4) Most recently, this year, J-Novel.Club (https://j-novel.club), an
outfit that apparently usually publishes translations of Japanese manga,
is branching out into German fiction series as well with the series
Maddrax, John Sinclair, and ... Perry Rhodan Neo, the "reboot series" of
PR started in 2011. So far 3 volumes are out, each covering 2 books
of the German series, with volume 4 scheduled to come out in November.

Clearly I liked it enough to keep reading... for another 1800

Wow !

Yes, this is my second reading of PR. I read most, if not all of them,
back in the 1970s when I found them on the revolving rack of science
fiction books in our grocery store. I bought this set on ebay about a
decade or so ago. It is missing two books, #100 and another one.

I remember reading about that. I saw some notes how they were
translating various jargon and was bemused and exasperated that
they turned "Schwarzschild-Generator" into "black sphere generator".
Never heard of Karl Schwarzschild, I guess. The usual perils of
people with a humanities education who had their last science class
in fifth grade then going on to translate science fiction.

Oooh, _John Sinclair_. Another huge German pulp series, this time
supernatural horror, running since 1973.
