Doesn't work with a show that is broadcast over two years. For example
starts in November and finishes in Febraury (perhaps with a Christmas
break in the middle).

I've never bothered to look it up, but in America it might be based on
the 'Ratings Year' or the 'Awards Year', rather than an actual calendar
year.

As above, not necessaily an actual "year". It's simply a set of
episodes broadcast at the same time, followed by a break.

It's simply a "Series" (things like DVD collections might call it the
"Full Series", "Complete Series", or "Entire Series"). The usual
distinction is that it doesn't have number, unlike for example "Series
5" or "5th Series".
