Movie Review: Maestro subtitled: How I learned to stop worrying and marry a
gay person.

Although respendent with a lot of Lenny's music as background, this film is
mostly a film about his marriage to Felicia. Rather, mostly about the troubles
of his marriage to Felicia. His musical accomplishments are either just
vaguely referred to in passing, or in talking about after they're over (i.e.
taking over for Bruno Walter).

The good news: Carey Mulligan as Felicia deserves an Oscar nomination. Very
heartwarming performance.

The bad news: Bradley Cooper is no Leonard Bernstein

Not once did I feel like Cooper even reminded me of Bernstein. It was always
Cooper pretending to be somebody he wasn't, and it wasn't Bernstein.

Even the dramatic parts felt like a stereotypical Hallmark movie. There was no
there, there.

Worst part was Cooper jumping around aping the choreography of Bernstein's
conducting the Mahler 2. It seemed like he memorized all Bernstein's
movements, but there was no connection to the music there (it was like he was
dancing to the music like children do). Lenny could inspire with that
movement, but Cooper is no Bernstein.

Finally: the nose. Did they re-shoot some scenes where his nose might be too
"Jewish" after the kerfuffle? I didn't notice any exaggeration or a purported
stereotypical Jewish nose. In fact, he looked more like Jamie Farr ("Klinger"
on MASH), then Leonard Bernstein, and Bernstein was certainly more handsome.

If you take anything home after watching this movie, it will be Mulligan's
performance. The rest was schlock.

I watched it on netflix with a home surround sound setup and the performances
used as background sounded great.

I agree about Mulligan. But what spoiled it most for me was the constant
smoking. They light up in every damn scene. I know it was authentic but
it was hard to take.

Yes, and it's a persistent stain in almost any movie nowadays. Everyone's
saying "please don't smoke" but Hollywood actors insist on being veritable
chimneys whenever possible. Great examples for today's youth to bring back the
stylishness of smoking! Whether or not someone is smoking doesn't make for
better actors, nor even realism. My Dad's siblings were all smokers, yet that
isn't what I remember them best for.

I mentioned it to my wife after the movie that cigarettes seem to smell more
than they used to, and the reason is probably that we are not used to the
smell of cigarettes being everywhere, as it used to be.

What's next? Ban fat people from starring in movies? No more McDonald's in movies?

Become as woke as New Zealand tried to be?

"New Zealand's new government says it plans to scrap the nation's world-leading smoking ban to fund tax cuts."

It's amazing to think back on how ubiquitous cigarette smoke used
to be.... Smoking & non-smoking sections across the aisle from
each other! It wasn't so long ago.

And yes, tobacco smoke also numbs your sense of smell.

Btw a not too bad movie that is critical of the Tobacco industry:

The Insider (1999) starring Russell Crowe and based on real events (google Jeffrey Wigand):

*I remember this movie as rather boring though (also because we also mainly know what will happen) and being overlong (been years since I watched it); but the cinematography, acting and character development etc (afair) was not too bad.

Na I have to say: The movie sucks (after watchign the trailer and remembering a bit more). I was more intrigued by the story surroundign Wigand and the Tobacco Industry back then (watched it way after it was released); the movie was a snooze-fest.

I finally saw this movie last week. On the whole, I agree with the review
above.
I don't think the director did a good job of directing himself as the lead.
Carey
Mulligan was exceptional, especially in comparison.
