In my youth, I remember often hearing this particular song...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMKmpsf3uKI

but it has only now shown up on YouTube. (It could
previously be heard as part of a video of a live performance
by many different artists that went on for several hours.)

The song to which the link is given above is "Rosaline",
sung by Russ Thornberry. Now going more formally as
Russell Thornberry, he is indeed the same fellow from
Texas who lived in Canada for a while, and now has a
cable TV show about hunting.

Why, that song was almost as popular in Canada as this
one (which is easy to find on YouTube):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5tr_L31StI

The one above is "If You Could Read My Mind", by Gordon
Lightfoot.

Not, of course, to be confused with this song with a somewhat
similar title by John Williams:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFgF2Py2OtE

here performed by Maureen McGovern.

Of course, many might be hesitant to click on the links above,
knowing nothing of the musical genre to which they belong.

So I will note that they are somewhat similar to songs more
familiar to Americans such as these:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLPiYZrwAzU
Sweet Caroline

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ighSddnnaPE
Song Sung Blue

by Neil Diamond.

There are other songs with "Rosaline" as their title.

One from the 1950s is available in at least these three
versions on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4yIRdUJsas
Joe Loss

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1UIDkWOwO8
Teddy Johnson

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOmrJhosNAU
Gustav Winckler

and these three artists each have their own songs with
that title:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LM5czzKZPE
Mirabai Kukathas

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnJWQ6ZsrPs
Blue Lenex

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys7SdHhXL7c

I was thinking of another song the other day.

It has a catchy melody, but the subject matter of the
song, I would have thought, would be disturbing.

And yet it was by Neil Diamond, not by Gordon Lightfoot;
somehow, it managed to be permitted to succeed
in the American market.

It is, of course, Cracklin' Rosie that I refer to.

I once heard that the song referred to carbonated rosé
wine, popular on Indian reservations, where it's comfort
replaced that of an actual girlfriend for lonely men.

Never heard it. Nobody here has heard of it. Name of the singer is familiar, but not very.

If it was on the Radio, then the reason is simple:

it attracted listeners, which sold commercial time to advertisers.

it's like hearing Moon River on The Andy Williams Show.

This Rosaline, again:

in the native language of his own country, with the title "Jos Lukisit Kuin Kirjaa".

Odd, that's not how I would characterize that song.

Instead, to me it's like Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne"; that is, it seems to be
a "this girl is really mysterious" kind of song.

Canadian radio did have the Canadian Content rules from the
CRTC: Canadian Radio-Television Commission. I can remember
pulling in CKLW, Windsor on my pocket transistor after sundown -
the atmospheric condition , not the Lightfoot song. The "Big 8"
broke Alice Cooper ("18," produced by Canuck Bob Ezrin.)
CKLW played an awful lot of "The Guess Who, which I didn't mind.
