Well, my wife and son are going out of town, so I guess I'm dragging my daughter to it. What's funny is that I tried to watch it on DVD the other day and she got bored after two minutes and left the room. She's in for a fun surprise on Saturday.

Nice! I love these old-school screenings. Here in Vancouver, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan had a 40th anniversary screening a week ago, at a local indie theatre, and it was great fun to check out.

Never seen the GI Joe film, and am curious.

Well, I won't spoil the plot for you. But it's probably my second-favorite animated film after The Transformers: the Movie.

My daughter is ten years old and she's into really girly stuff. So I told here there were a couple of cool female characters in the movie (Pythona and Jinx) and that seemed to appease her.

The showing was supposed to be at 1:00, but after about 25 minutes it still hadn't started so I asked them about it. Somebody hurried up into the projection room and skipped past all the previews along with most of the opening theme song. That was a bit of a disappointment, since the title sequence is honestly one of my favorite parts of the movie. But, life goes on.

I had thought that they were going to pull a Transformers: the Movie and crop the fullscreen aspect ratio to fit the theater screen, but instead they played it fullscreen and just didn't use the sides of the movie screen. But, at least you didn't lose any details this way. I've seen the movie dozens of times, so I know it very well, but I was still able to pick out new details I'd never noticed before. Seeing it on the big screen is an entirely different sort of experience.

My daughter took an active interest in who the good guys were and who the bad guys were. I didn't expect her to learn everybody's name, but while we were waiting for the movie to start, I gave her a primer on some of the important characters (Duke, Cobra Commander, Serpentor) so she would know to look for them and recognize them. It was fun looking at the movie through a child's eyes, which is I think how you're supposed to do it.

We basically got the theater to ourselves. I bought the tickets a few days ago, but when I checked this morning our two seats were still the only ones that had been reserved. At the last minute, right before one o'clock, a dad strolled in with two of his kids. But, we were up front and they were all the way in the back, which I was honestly fine with.

I don't go to the movies very often. Modern films really don't hold much appeal for me, and if there's something I'm vaguely interested in seeing, I can usually catch it for a dollar-fifty when Redbox gets it. But, there's something fun about the theatrical film experience with popcorn and licorice and soda pop, and having the action take up nearly your entire field of view. Best thirty bucks I've ever spent.

I would have been absolutely livid. There would have been no end to the hell I would have raised. That opening would have been the majority of my reason for paying the ticket price. I wasn't even there and I'm getting mad about it!

You were 50% of the audience! Your dissatisfaction counts immensely. I just can't even fathom their incompetence in the wake of how much movies cost nowadays. It should not have happened.

I'm sorry they skipped past the opening sequence - that's just not right. I would've raised heck about it.

Was there any additional bonus footage? With the TFTM release, we got a sneak peek at Bumblebee The Movie, plus a performance by Stan Bush.

They advertised that there were supposed to be some extras, but I wonder if those got skipped. I didn't stick around until after the end credits, since I needed to pick up my wife and son, and the movie had started late.

But, it was super cool seeing it in the theater. Overall, it was a fun experience.

From reading Joe message boards I figured out that the extras were a segment featuring Emily and Lenny from the Hasbro Joe team talking about Classified figures and a short animated video explaining Cobra La and the Cobra characters, which would get explained in the movie anyway. And these extras were loaded at the front of the movie so you missed nothing by skipping the end credits.

I contracted COVID and couldn't go. Ah well.

Hope you're better. They seem to be bringing back TFTM with some regularity; maybe we'll get this one back in cinemas again, especially as exhibitors keep looking for ways to lure us away from streaming services.

It baffles the mind how many actors they've paid lately to record promotional material in which they say, "Movies are meant to be watched in theaters! It's what the director wants! It's what the cast and crew want! The proper way to watch these films is on a really big screen in a room filled with strangers and a floor literally covered in sticky soda pop!"

I won't deny the theatrical experience is great, but I've got a big TV now, so it still takes up most of my field of vision if I sit close enough. And as a bonus, my feet don't get stuck to the floor.

It mimics a quasi-religious experience, the ritual of showing up at an appointed time and gathering with your fellows to sit in a darkened room, gazing up at larger than life images. It's arguably a large part of what made actors akin to gods in modern culture.

Nowadays, we treat movies with far less reverence. They're just disposable content, to be watched on our phones and forgotten by the time the credits roll.

Were I an artist, I'd like for my work to be appreciated in just such a reverent and awe-inspiring context, rather than something you could use to pass the time while sitting in the bathroom.
