In the early '70s, a precocious 15-year-old is smitten with a woman less
young than he by 10 years. Such is the bare opening of Paul Thomas
Anderson's B.P.-nominee, LICORICE PIZZA. As usual for him, Anderson's
narrative goes everywhere, and always engagingly. (A hefty dollop of
post-viewing enjoyment can be found throughout IMDb's lengthy trivia
page for this flick.) Well recommended.

I couldn't finish it. Made it as far as them leaving the house they'd
been "cleaning" and spotting the client, Barbara Streisand's boyfriend
or something, walking back to the house and I realized I had been hating
every minute of this thing and decided to bail.

There is nothing "engaging" about this movie. Not the lead actors, or the superficial script, or the music that is mostly good but has nothing to do with what is going on screen. Even the title is stupid and has nothing to do with anything. A total misfire.

At Metacritic, LP appears to be far and away last year's critical winner
-- which I'm assuming all four opinions so far expressed here (including
mine) were ignorant of. As the only one of those four who quite enjoyed
this flick (though I went in expecting not to), I'm a bit puzzled.

I never use Metacritic (or IMDb). I'm puzzled as to how you enjoyed it. It was almost a spoof of an indie created by someone with ADHD.

I use them mainly to root out really lame stuff -- which they do a fair
job of, and which I need because of my anti-foreknowledge religion. But
as I said, till after I'd posted, I didn't realize how beloved LP was.
As to 'how I enjoyed it' (easier to address than, say, 'why'), I found
it at once boringly real yet consistently surprising. Probably also
helped that I remember its '70s era if not its San Fernando locale.

Licorice Pizza was a record store chain in Southern California in the 70's.

You made it farther then me, I bailed on the flick after about 10mins
as I found the story and characters boring.

“Boogie Nights” and “Inherent Vice” are good movies but this one ain’t.
