I was expecting 5 stories that I haven't read (or perhaps even heard
of). Instead one story I hadn't heard of and 4 that I have read.

I am one for five, "Marooned in Realtime" by Vernor Vinge (1986).

There are many SF/F stories that meet this criteria: Flinx from the Pip
and Flinx series, just about any Heinlein book (especially Lazarus
Long), Perry Rhodan, Captain Kirk, etc, etc, etc.

I've read Marooned in Realtime and I think I've read all the "People"
stories but not collected in a single volume.
