Hi.

I am searching for excellent Beethoven symphonies cycle without the repeats.
I like Szell very much, but sound is not very good in some of the discs. Do you
know of other similar options in greater sound?

For a more modern sound maybe try Mariss Jansons; but he observes the repeats generally.

If one does not like the repeats, what
does this say about the music? Not good
enough to hear again? Too much yada yada?

The repeats can be trivially edited out
using any audio editing software. One
can have one's cake and eat it too! ;-)

I don't know, but the newer Szell CDs like in his
Complete Sony set are supposed to sound better than
the old CDs, closer to the sound of the mastertapes.

The Essential Classics are said to be reengineered
with heavy muffling by Noise Reduction and fake reverb
added to cover up the noise reduction artifacts along
with monkeying with the EQ.

But I don't know if Szell avoids repeats I'm just
commenting about the Szell CDs.

You're probably going to be stuck with mostly older cycles. Nowadays it has become a faux pas to perform Beethoven without the repeats.

If you like Szell, I believe Rene Leibowitz may be just what you're looking for. And in excellent sound, too.

Beethoven's muzak. Remove them and
there is nothing left.
