There was an odd episode in Season 3 called "The Face of Nijika"
At least, I could have sworn that's what the episode was called.

Most internet sources say it's actually "The Face of the Nijika".
The weird part is, the production notes and the original script says
"The Face of Nijika", like I remember.

So either I'm nuts, or Rhino screwed up the title when they made their
DVDs. Does anyone have any pre-Rhino recordings of the episode?

Interesting. I wasn't aware that Rhino redid the title cards. I suppose adding the extra article makes for a better tribute to The Mikado.

Like much of Season 3, this episode is high-concept and attempts something more interesting than the standard EI/AD kidvid fare. Unfortunately, it's let down by the need to fit into a single 22 minute episode, and by the substandard animation courtesy of Nelson Shin's personal studio, AKOM. In hindsight, I resent how the presumed greed on his part to divert the animation budget into his own pockets resulted in the infamously shoddy production quality of Season 3. It will go down as one of the great "what-ifs" of G1; if only Toei or the Call of the Primitives studio had handled Season 3...

"Face of (the) Nijika" is a fascinating episode to me; the fantastical mishmash of Oriental exoticism (Chinese-armored Zamojins with Japanese food names, a Japanese geisha doll, a Buddha with a Korean-sounding name) works somehow to its benefit, unlike the cliche-ridden Carbombya in "Thief in the Night."

There are little bits of delightful trivia scattered throughout. The universal emulator. Magnus and Rodimus noting the density of the trees, which goes a long way to explain why these large humans are able to battle on an equal footing with Cybertronians. The idea of a race with starlight-powered mental abilities.

Having watched this episode recently, (and having missed out on the Viewing Club discussion), I couldn't help but ponder: Why were the Quintessons so terrified of the Zamojins? Is it possible that the Zamojins are in fact, the bad guys?

We're encouraged by the show to identify with the heretofore unknown Zamojins, if for no other reason than that they were once victimized by the Quintessons.

But does that make the Zamojins "good guys?" After all, the Quintessons aren't "evil" so much as amoral, placing profit and survival above all. They want their homeworld of Cybertron back from the Transformers who stole it, and they want to make money by selling arms to alien races. All defensible goals, from a certain point of view.

Why would they concern themselves with this singular alien civilization?

All signs point to the Zamojins being a race of religious warrior fanatics. They are built for power - they can singlehandedly take out Cybertronians. They are drawn as barbarians, with some even baring orc-like fangs. Their immediate response to seeing the Autobots is to attempt to murder them, rather than negotiate. Katsudon's attitude towards Nijika is less paternalistic concern and more a desire to safeguard the key to a potential weapon of mass destruction.

They don't even bother to hold a show trial with Blurr, like Quintessons would do - they simply prepare to dunk their captives in boiling hot lava to satisfy the bloodlust of their people.

When they reconnect the wiring inside Kodu-Ri by story's end, it feels less like the restoration of a sacred object and more like a race preparing its weapons of war.

Ultimately, it's possible that by undoing the Quadrant Lock's effects, Perceptor and the Autobots have unleashed Pandora's box on the galaxy. Powered by infinite starlight, the Zamojins, like the Mongols of yore, may be able to lay waste to countless civilizations. Viewed in that light, the episode doesn't end on a note of triumph, but one of tragedy.

I've got my copy that I taped off the Sci-Fi Channel in 1992 or so. I've actually got the tapes handy as well as a working VCR, so I can check in a little bit.

Zob (pretty sure it's always been "The Face of the Nijika," but I'll post a screenshot)

The tapes they had access to didn't have any of the on-screen titles, including the ending credits. I actually provided them with photos and time index notes to help them reconstruct the titles as accurately as possible. Nowadays I probably would just upload YouTube videos, but back in 2003, I was taking photographs of my TV set and jotting down notes like "titles fade in at 0:03, fade out at 0:08, right before we see Megatron enter the scene" or something like that.

They absolutely refused to misspell "A Deceptacon [sic] Raider in King Arthur's Court." I lobbied for that so hard. And yet they still got the titles for "The Master Builder(s)" wrong. Go figure.

Everything I've seen suggests that G.I. Joe wa the priority for Hasbro at the time. It was the "serious" show while Transformers was the "kiddie" show. In 1986, when we were getting crap like "Five Faces of Darkness," they were getting "Arise, Serpentor, Arise!" which was a similar multi-part season opener, only it was animated by Toei and it was BEAUTIFUL.

When I was collecting snippets for the G1 music restoration project, I also noticed that G.I. Joe had significantly higher sound fidelity. It's clear they were using better sound equipment for the Joe series than for Transformers.

And now look where the toy lines are today! Funny, innit?

Considering they were basically physically indestructible, if you gave them mental powers as well, they'd effectively be a super-species. Maybe the Quintessons had the right idea.

Another mystery solved!

Hasbro should consider hiring you as a consultant/archivist. Actually, considering how corporate-owned IP is becoming increasingly essential to companies like Hasbro and Mattel (https://archive.ph/vb2P7 and https://archive.ph/AYG1l), it would seem like a worthwhile investment to have a hire whose job is solely to organize and archive the history of the brands. It's amazing to me that a multibillion dollar concern like Hasbro needs to rely on fans like you, or the Wiki, to properly develop and market their own properties.. Institutional memory needs to be institutionalized for the future. We just need a snappy name for it, like "The Hall of Records," or "The Underbase."

It's amazing to me that a multibillion dollar concern like Hasbro needs to rely on fans like you, or the Wiki, to properly develop and market their own properties. Institutional memory needs to be institutionalized for the future. We just need a snappy name for it, like "The Hall of Records," or "The Underbase."

I love that "EI/AD" is still a term here. Kendrick would be proud.

Loving the thoughtful analysis in this thread. I'll do what I can to bring back "The Underbase", too!

Very cool - have you ever written up your experiences with Hasbro? Would be a great read.

I feel like that should be preserved somewhere, if only for reference purposes. Funny how that misspelling evokes nostalgia, while Energon's "Scorpinok" invites scorn.

In 1986, when we were getting crap like "Five Faces of Darkness," they were getting "Arise, Serpentor, Arise!" which was a similar multi-part season opener, only it was animated by Toei and it was BEAUTIFUL.

That's fascinating. Hasbro folks have said previously IIRC that Joe was aimed at a slightly older child, while TF was for the kiddies, and perhaps that affected their spending priorities.

I think Joe is destined to die as a collector nostalgia brand, and I say that with regret, as someone who was once a Joe fan first and foremost.
