One of the non-laser schemes is to explode currently available fusion bombs underground and recover the heat generated. Would it be possible to create a fission-triggered deuterium helium-3 fusion bomb? How would the radioactivity generated per recoverable unit of electricity compare with nuclear fission in powerplants? (remembering that deuterium helium-3 fusion yields no high energy neutrons)

D+3He fusion will also have D+D side reactions which do produce neutrons. Also,
3He isn't exactly easy to come by and is consequently pricy. Easier to use
conventional reactions and bribe local authorities to turn a blind eye to
the radioisotope hazard. Nobody is going to care if a few Nevadans have two
heads or tentacles.
