1) John Stewart has been a Green Lantern for decades now in the comics.

2) I haven't seen this, but in general DC animated features are better
than their live action ones.

Agreed. Now if they had made Hal Jordan a black man then there would
be grounds for being upset but Stewart is a different guy with a very
different back story from Jordan.

Yep, unlike a single entity such as Superman, the "Green Lantern" is a
group of various beings from various planets who each have been given a
power ring, so a new character with a new name, race, gender, etc.
doesn't matter.

It becomes ridiculous when they gender and/or race swap an existing
character simply to appease the Politically Correct whiners. Examples
would be the female Thor, the female and now black Doctor Who, etc.

I'd also like to point out the regeneration of Gallifreyan Time Lords
was established fairly early in the series to potentially include
non-human forms, and gender was shown to be malleable in how The
Doctor's nemesis The Master regenerated as female (also 2014).
The skin tone is after all a pretty minor thing here.
