Any one know the answer to the following question:

When you log on to a Google Group like rec.arts.movies.current-films,
is there any way you can "block" certain individual posters? I don't
mean block them from having access to the Google group. I just
mean block them so their posts aren't visible when I log on to the group.

I've tried to ask this question on Google Support, but that's pretty much a lost cause.

Thanks,

Irish Mike

Sadly, no. You'd think that when Google bought up DejaNews they'd
have included a "killfile" for users in one of their updates but it seems
they're too stupid to realize the benefit of this.

Furthermore, using the "report asshole" button does nothing either,
as evidenced by all the kooks happily shitposting all day every day
(most of whom are using Gmail accounts...)

Yeah, there are no humans working at Google and no way to get
a answer from the faceless mega-corporation.

Despite what Google likes to believe, Usenet newsgroups are not owned
by Google.

Usenet Newsgroups are a public resource, you can't have anyone blocked
/ banned from posting. You could send a complaint to whichever
newsgroup service they use (as listed in their message's headers), but
the chances of that complaint actually being read, let alone anything
being done about it, are less than zero.

The only real option is to use a proper newsreader apps with filtering
options so that you don't see those posts. Even then you'll still see
them when someone else replies.

He's asking why Google doesn't have a killfile option, to which I answered;
Google is stupid.

First, thanks to you, and Ed, for the information. So, you're saying this
in not a Google Group but a Usenet Newsgroup? If so, do you know of
any particular "newsreader app" that will allow the user to "kill file" certain posters?

Thanks,

Irish Mike

Thunderbird, among most others. But none "kills" the poster. Rather
they download all messages, and then do a custom pruning of your tree.

There maybe some that groups which are only Google Groups (I've never
bothered to look), but they Google also set it up to retrieve many of
the Usenet Newsgroups. They're all accessible from the Google Groups
website, which is why some people get confused.

Depends what computer/tablet/phone operating system you're using. Most
decent newsreaders these days have some sort of filtering option.

I use Unison on the Mac. It does download all the message headers (not
the messages themselves), so I see there are "50" new messages in a
newsgroup, but once I click on that newsgroup it removes all the
filtered out posts, which might sometimes be all 50, and just shows me
the message titles of what is left.
