And that's just the top layer. He saved Star Trek: The Motion Picture when the previous effects company had produced no usable footage and the release date was looming. Silent Running had some of the most "it's not just a man in a tin suit" robots up to that time, and on a low budget.

Even his failures inspire. Magicam -basically two synchronized cameras, one following actors across a blank background, one -extended on a periscope- moving through a miniature set- was not ready for the Canadian TV show The Starlost, but it was ready for Cosmos, showing Sagan walking through the Library at Alexandra and across the Cosmic Calendar. His ShowScan -using the full resolution of 70mm film at a higher framerate for more realism (see Jackson's Hobbit movies)- was the reason he made the movie Brainstorm; it was no Cinerama, but at least the script was several good gadget stories.
