I hardly ever remember my dreams nowadays. I also don't sleep well most nights, so I suppose I may simply not be entering a dreaming state. However, I spent most of last week getting up at three o'clock to go to work early and help with the Electronics reset, so by the end of the week I was exhausted. Last night I slept for like twelve hours. And I dreamed vividly.

In the spirit of bringing back all things from the 1980's and 1990's, I had this dream that they were making new episodes of Transformers: Generation 2. However, this time they were doing it with slightly more creativity, and taking footage from G1 but making extensive changes to create all-new narratives.

In the episode I was watching, they'd taken older animated of Optimus Prime but they'd gotten Peter Cullen to come in and record new lines of dialogue, effectively creating a new story. They were also doing some new cut-and-paste animation so they could, for example, have Optimus jump onto a hoverboard and then have him fly away.

They had also officially added Jem to the Transformers animated canon, and they superimposed 80's animation of Jem onto the Teletraan I computer monitor to make it look like Prime had contacted her and that they were in a cooperative effort to stop whatever evil forces they were trying to stop.

I can probably tell you what real-life events seeded this specific dream. There was an actual YouTube video where somebody had replaced the AKOM animation from the end of "The Rebirth" with scenes from "Call of the Primitives" and the Headmasters animation to do a sort of "What If 'The Rebirth' Had Been Animated by Toei?" video. It wasn't done well but I can appreciate the effort that went into it. Also, somebody on Reddit pointed out the Inferno fire truck vehicle model that had appeared in one of the early episodes.. It's always cute when some little kid makes a "discovery" that I've known about for like 20 years.

They say your subconscious mind can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality (which is one of the reasons you might dream about a movie or TV character, or why you dream things that seem patently absurd when you wake up, but at the time you accept it wholeheartedly). So, obviously my dreaming brain thought there really was a new version of G1 out there, because, after all, I saw it on the Internet so it must be true!

Zob (the Jem cartoon also had Cobra Commander in it, Bumblebee, and at least two different Optimus Prime vehicles, so all three shows are part of the same canon 'sfar as I'm concerned)

Very cool, Zob. Thanks for sharing this dream. (I love the idea of Jem appearing on Teletraan's screen, in particular!)

I have these kind of dreams often. I turn on the TV and see new G1
episodes airing. They often feature the 1988 cast like Nightbeat and the
Powermasters. Then I scramble to find my VCR to record it. But it's not
there.

I think this is because this is how it actually worked back in the day.
I had no idea when new episodes would air. The TV Guide didn't give that
info for kids shows. So I would just tune in Transformers with my VCR in
hand and hope that a new episode would air and not a rerun.
1987 was painful because it was just The Rebirth and I was waiting in
vain the rest of the year. Then there was that crappy Prime puppet show
thing in 1988 airing at 5am and I kind of knew Transformers was dead and
not coming back.
