I haven't looked so much at "Peanuts" lately...
the kids participating in the same fantasy
(I assume) as the dog, is a little weird.

My impression is that Snoopy usually doesn't
pay much attention to what "the round headed
kid" or others say, so maybe he's giving them
things to say here that suit his story.

My next reflection is that Snoopy's fantasies
give him a rougher time than mine do. Going to
war against "The Red Baron" is usually a bust, too.

I don't think this is end vs means because the protagonist is not inflicting pain on others, but suffering it themselves. In fact, the worth of the trophy (like a laurel wreath) is pretty much only that it certifies that its winner has been prepared to sacrifice their body (and the time and money taken to prepare their equipment for their race) to win.

Bear in mind this strip is from 1975. Schulz passed in 2000.

I agree, the Peanuts human characters seem very aware of

And as someone I know elsewhere in the World Wide Web says every time
Peanuts comes up, Schulz wanted EVERYTHING Peanuts shut down and ended
upon his death and said so in his will.

In one daily strip Lucy said, "Snoopy isn't as smart as I thought
he was . . . he moves his lips when he reads."

It comes and goes as required. They all critique his novel for instance.

(It was actually published eventually)

I don't have a cite for it, its just something he's ranted about for
many years whenever they come up.

He didn't make that request, he requested that nobody else would do peanuts strips.
