A crucial threshold has been crossed.
Instead of nuclear weapons only being used to deter countries from committing aggression, they have now been successfully used to deter the United States of America from resisting an act of aggression.
Taiwan is next.
And over the coming years, even America's closest non-nuclear allies - places like France, Germany, Australia - will all be making arrangements to meet whatever demands Russia or China might send their way.
During the Cold War, the United States recognized that it dared not allow that threshold to be crossed, which is why America went to war even in such small and far-away countries as Korea and Vietnam. But it refused to see what was coming when Vladimir Putin was elected the President of Russia, and it even refused to respond to the new realities in 2008, when Russia conducted its first military adventure beyond its borders in Georgia, while President Bush was isolated because he was attending the Beijing Olympics.
Had there been a line of NATO troops, including American troops, all along the borders of the Ukraine, the message would have been clear - an invasion would have been Russia triggering World War III, and thus no invasion would have happened, no Americans or Ukrainians would have been killed - instead, the peace would have been kept, just as it had been kept for decades during the Cold War. Russia did not invade the German Federal Republic, remember?
Unless Vladimir Putin is eventually overthrown, or after he dies peacefully in his old age, if we must wait that long, his successors don't continue his dangerous policies, we are headed for the end of liberty on this planet.
Since the United States will still use its nuclear weapons in defence of its own homeland, presumably it will be the last to go. But go it will, unless things change.

What color is the sky in your world?

Of course, it _is_ true that there appears to be a high probability
that on November 5, 2024, the United States will take its first
serious steps on the road to ceasing to be a democratic nation.

January 6, 2021, of course, being an abortive failure, like the
Beer Hall Putsch in Munich. The second try, though, may be
successful now, as it was then.

My take on this is consistent. Between now and January 20,
2025, Canada should develop its own strategic nuclear
deterrent. Of course, this won't happen: in Canadian
political culture, the idea is unspeakable and unthinkable.

With Trump, and now the Ukraine, however, it should be
clear to anyone with a modicum of intelligence that the
genuinely unspeakable and unthinkable is liable to catch
up to us in the span of a very few years, and the only way
to escape is to be able to genuinely defend ourselves.

For the United States: well, the Republican Party did do
at least one good thing since Nixon. My advice to Joe
Biden would be to follow the strategy of Ronald Reagan:
an all-out arms race with the goal of rendering the
nuclear weapons of Russia "impotent and obsolete".

ObSF: Jerry Pournelle.

You've pointed out that Russia's economy is not its
strong point. Very well then, attack the weak point.
Lead where they are incapable of following.

Oh, no. I would not expect the U.S. to respond to the Russian incursion in
Georgia with a nuclear strike on Russia, leading to World War III.

Just immediately admitting Georgia to NATO after the Russian troops left.

And the Ukraine as well.

The phrase is a common way of stating that I believe your
statement to be highly at variance with reality.

Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Norway and Australia, for example,
are all countries with a representative form of government. None of them
are direct democracies in the sense of ancient Athens.

However, they are representative democracies. And so is the United States.

What the Republican Party has recently shown is that it appears to be
prepared to make elections irrelevant in U.S. Federal politics, so that
the Republicans will control the Presidency and likely the Senate as well.

Not for the legitimate exercise of their First Amendment rights.

Yes, economic inequality is a problem in the United States.

However, there is a vast difference between an imperfect
democracy like the United States, and a totalitarian dictatorship
like the People's Republic of China, or even an authoritarian
dictatorship like today's Russia.

> The Russians are not the threat Quadi.

The Russians are certainly _a_ threat, as they have now
deprived the free men of the Ukraine of their liberty.

China does have certain strengths that make it a more
challenging opponent than Russia in some areas. That
does not mean the United States is unable to resist it,
if it is willing to make the effort.

It is true that the conquest of a country is not complete until you can
put boots on the ground in it.

However, if the United States did not have nuclear weapons, it could
be easily conquered.

It's true that after all its big cities were nuked, one couldn't steal its
factories or technology. But there would still be all that farmland,
and all those mineral resources.

The idea is for *no one* to die. In order for that to be effective,
the troops to be placed in the Ukraine before the invasion would
have to belong to a country with full nuclear capabilities.

> So what exactly is the US going to do to China? Tell us in detail.

Oh, the U.S. can't really do much _to_ China, as it has nuclear
weapons too.

But if Taiwan either had its very own nuclear deterrent, or, failing that,
a large presence of U.S. troops on its soil, that would very much change
China's calculations of the cost of invading Taiwan.

There remains the problem of having poisoned that land so that
it may be useless without expensive, difficult and time-consuming
remediation. We have enough problems with brownfields that have
been polluted by chemicals without armies using nukes.

No. But I really don't think that's an issue. I'm sure the government of

Rubbish. The US was deterred by the fact that the President is too
senile to know what room he's in, and the puppeteers controlling
him are Democrats, either in the pay of Putin or too cowardly to
cross the street without a Boy Scout to hold heir hand (or both).

As usual, you're insanely out of touch with reality.

China is certainly watching what' happening in Ukraine. Right now,
of course, they're watching the Russians get handed their ass, but
how long that lasts remains to be seen.

Which they'd be doing regardless, because they've *been* doing so
for years.

I am increasingly of the opinion that the Democrats are in serious
danger of losing both houses of Congress in November. And if the
puppeteers don't pull their cowardly heads out of the ground (and
their asses), they could well lose the White House *before* 2024.

The statements I have seen have been very careful to distinguish NATO from non-NATO countries, and I think this is the relevant distinction. During the cold war, NATO did not have enough conventional forces in Europe to do more than slow down a Russian advance, let alone advance into any part of the Eastern Bloc, and it failed to intervene in situations such as the Prague Spring. So I do not see the behaviour so far as fundamentally different. Nor does it tell me much about the defense or not of Taiwan.

You should get used to those annoyances, because the people in
charge of your country are so addicted to their fear they literally
can't live without it any more. They will _never_ lift the
restrictions, as long as they live.

It is true that the Soviet Union still claimed the countries of Eastern Europe
were sovereign states, whose people just happened to choose Communist
regimes.

To view the invasion of the Ukraine as analogous to the invasions of Hungary
and Czechoslovakia during the Soviet period, however, one has to fail to view
the Ukraine as having become a fully and genuinely sovereign state after the
fall of the Soviet Union.

I view it as analogous to... an invasion of, say, Sweden or Finland... instead.

And you may not choose to view the situation of the Ukraine as truly
analogous to that of Taiwan, but surely it says something about the limits
of American resolve.

He seems to be on course to be a modern Peter III.

(Actually, he reminds me more of a French emperor. Specifically Napoleon III,
who racked up a lot of successes before things suddenly went south)

That happened to Napoleon I as well (though I will admit that his fall
wasn't as sudden).
