It would be interesting for your readers to compare this to "Unicorn Variation" by Roger Zelazny. I like both stories, but I think the Zelazy would be more appealing to someone who doesn't have a chess background.

As a frequent player at the Toronto chess club in the 70s and 80s, the ugliness of the Yugoslav breakup came as not surprise. Arguments would start in English, get louder, then switch to what we then called Serbo-Croation, with on occasion some Hungarian or German thrown it. The arguments may have begun over chess, but didn't always stay there.

I assume that Leiber had the same experiences, over a longer period.
