Even before the French started rewriting the Arthur stories (for
example, Lancelot wasn't in the originals), the Arthur stories didn't
have much to do with historical post-Roman Britain.

The closest connection to historical post-Roman Britain is Gildas,
who was explicitly writing a political screed (and never mentions
Arthur by name).

Another Sutcliff-imprinted person here. The Lantern bearers, grade five, some other medieval one, grade two.

Though very different from the above's "Sword at Sunset", I thought Baxter's portrait of Arthur in "Coalescent", was not a bad one.

For me, it was Mary Stewart's _The Crystal Cave_ and _The Hollow Hills_.

Still an annual re-read, but spoiled most other historical fiction
versions (White, Bradley's _TMOA_) for me.

I enjoyed Murphy & Cochran's _The Forever King_ as a modern setting,
but wasn't real fond of _The Broken Sword_.

For me, Mallory, though I really like White, and am a fan of
Boorman's 'Excalibur' movie.

I lived in the Glastonbury area for 6 years as a kid, and was
heavily exposed to the more woo woo end of the mythos.

Undoubtedly. I've always been more interested in the history than
the myths.

Yup, that one. Including sex scenes in full plate armor. It's absolutely
ridiculous from a historical pov, but wonderful from a mythological
one. It conflates a lot of things, but that lets it include a lot of references
to things most versions leave out, such as the Wounded (Fisher) King/Wasteland
arc.

I like both, but the myths are more fun. One just has to keep
the dividing line distinct

That was painful even to watch, despite bare titties.

I don't read much fantasy, and I'm fairly picky about what I read
in any genre. And most Arthurian fantasy has been crap for a long
time, and these days, it's usually far, far more about modern woke
politics than anything else (but then, what isn't?).

I guess I'm still scarred by Mists of Avalon, one of three books
I've ever put down partway through knowing I would *never* pick
them up again. A hundred pages of "the middle ages were terrible,
especially for women becaue men suck" was quite enough.
