Turns out that in addition to being an academic and a pioneer roleplaying
game designer, M. A. R. Barker was also a Nazi who wrote a Nazi novel
and was on the board of a Holocaust denial group. The Tekumel Foundation
folks apparently knew this a decade ago but chose to not deal with it.

("But he was a product of his time!" Well, yes, but the time he was a product
of was essentially now.)

https://www.reddit.com/r/osr/comments/tg316v/mar_barker_creator_of_t%C3%A9kumel_and_empire_of_the/

Yeah, it would be pretty easy to come up with a Five Books by SF authors who
turn out to have been Nazi or Nazi adjacent but I don't wanna and anyway
Tor wouldn't publish it.

Would a list of contributions to human society produced by people now considered to be Nazi adjacent be cancelled for being Nazi propaganda or left wing propaganda? Just off the top of my head I think I recall claimed connections to Kurt Waldheim, Herbert Von Karajan, Benedict XVI, and the beneficiaries of Operation Paperclip. Is there some number N at which the statement "these N people are Nazi adjacent" changes polarity?

One of the contentions of S.M.Sterling's "Conquistador" is that some WWII era people, especially combat veterans, were considerably more ruthless than equivalents born 50 years later - IIRC WWII strategic bombing was given as an example. While I don't regard my parent's generation as comparable to John Rolfe, let alone Salvatore Bosco, I am not sure I would regard that time as "essentially now"

In this case, Barker was straight up writing Nazi stuff, as well as actively
pushing holocaust denial. Not adjacent but an actual willful Nazi, most of
whose efforts along this line postdated WWII. He only died a decade ago so
if your next move is "product of his time", his time was effectively now.

That said, he was something of a self-cancelling author, what with the long
string of companies that went bust publishing Tekumel, and the fact his fantasy
novels were, while offering interesting world building, rather unreadable.

There is a temptation to paint anyone who was a citizen of Germany or
Austria and didn't try to kill Hitler as a Nazi or Nazi-adjacent.
Sometimes a German is just a German.

If Joe Biden becomes known as the monster who hurled the world into
nuclear war, and destroyed civilization will everbody who is living in
the US today be a Democrat or Democrat-adjacent? (Note, this is not a
dig at Joe, but right now it looks like there's a real possibility
that that is going to happen, and history, in this case, would be
written by somebody far away from anywhere the war happened).

Indeed. Here in Alberta, a provincial MLA quoted Wernher von Braun, and
was condemned for "quoting a Nazi", so political correctness _has_ reached
that height.

However, M. A. R. Barker came by his personal beliefs freely, in a climate
where Nazism was not in control. So surely that does open him to some
degree of personal responsibility?

Um, yes. One can't really concoct a credible complaint about how the
world is being denied a masterpiece of literature - no, several masterpieces
of literature! - because of "cancel culture".

I suppose this won't stop some people from trying anyways. Having to actually
read those novels... would not be punishment enough, but it would be a start.

1) What, you really think that it's likely Joe Biden will take my advice?

2) And while I don't remember for sure whether this bit was in "Number
of the Beast" or a related work, I do remember from Heinlein a bit about
how in one alternate timeline Einstein is thought of as a monster - because
just because it was his people, the Jews, that Hitler went after, Einstein
supported developing the atom bomb... and *that* timeline had a
catastrophic nuclear World War III.

The Tekumel Foundation Board of Directors (https://www.tekumel.com/)
has confirmed that "Randolph D. Calverhall" was a M. A. R. Barker
pseudonym:

"...our research shows Professor M.A.R. Barker wrote Serpent's Walk,
an anti-Semitic novel that was published under a pseudonym in 1991.
We have done our due diligence to ascertain the facts regarding
Serpent's Walk and Professor Barker's affiliation with The Journal of
Historical Review and we believe this needs to be recognized as part
of Professor Barker's past."

I have scanned the novel, which is freely available from Archive.org. It
includes plentiful quotes from "Mein Kampf" and lengthy explanations
of how the Holocaust never happened, praise for Joseph Mengele, etc.

The plot is reasonably straightforward. The SS went underground back
in 1945 and spent the next century rebuilding behind the scenes. It's
204x and, on the surface, the "Jewish-Establishment network" controls
the world, e.g.:

"since the Jews got the Anti-Defamation Amendment added onto the
American Constitution back in 2005, it would be a miracle if you had
ever heard anything but crap! The 'Holocaust' is now the only legal
history. You go to jail for saying different."

However, the SS-led resistance has almost finished the rebuilding
process and is about to strike back. An advanced AI, "the closest
thing to a complete thinking machine ever made, better than a
human brain", gets involved, which made me wonder if Barker was
a fan of _The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress_.

The objections to "cancel culture" have nothing to do with the
quality of the work.

Only a fascist leftie would claim otherwise.

You have literally just said "Fascism is OK as long as it oppresses
stuff I don't like."

Which does seem to be a core value of the left.

No doubt your records are updated accordingly.
We appreciate your diligence.

After reading Quadibloc's actual statement, it seems more of a
dig at the allegedly poor quality of the novels, like James was doing,
than any actual statement about cancel culture. "It isn't cancel culture
that prevented these novels from being widely acclaimed; it's that they
suck."

But it wouldn't be a Terry posting if it didn't warp any possible subject
into a denunciation of the left, amirite?

I read _Man Of Gold_ and thought it was decent, and would have read a
follow-up but somehow I missed the fact there was one. (I suppose I would
have been moving and starting my first real job around that time).
