Have you ever watched "Dead Like Me"? I don't recall now if being a
Reaper was a punishment in that, but it wasn't a bed of roses.

No, I see very little TV these days.

As for Charley, it's not a bed of roses either what with the prince
of darkness in her bedroom and the apocalypse coming on, but she
does get to bring lost souls into the light.

I think he means he passed the audition.

Terry Pratchett's _Mort_ comes to mind. Mort was
at the apprentice fair... at closing time... when he
got a job opportunity. A job that got to him.

"Hotel Transylvania: The Series" had an episode
"Death Becomes Him".

"Pedro gets stuck with Death's job when he steals his robe.
Death is only too happy to pawn the job off to him."

So Death was looking for a break that time.

Dead Like Me was 2003-2004. And no, it wasn't a penalty - the
title character was hit and killed by a toilet seat from a space station
that reentered the atmosphere.

In the British comedy series "Mulberry" the title character was also a reaper, Death's son as it happens. He wasn't too keen on the job. Took after his mother too much. As with "Dead Like Me", it did not finish, the third season was written but not produced.

There was also “Reaper”, in which the young hero learned that his
parents had sold their first-born child to the Devil, not planning ever
to have one. That’s not legitimately a penalty, perhaps, but it feels
much more like one. I confess I now remember it chiefly as giving Missy
Peregrym (“Rookie Blue”, “FBI”) her first major role.
