Having read your reviews of the individual volumes, I am surprised to read
in _this_ one that the series was of "remarkable quality", in addition to being
impressive in the number of anthologies included.

Orbit 22 doesn't _seem_ to be referred to anywhere. There is a reference
to another book - "The Best from Orbit", a collection of the best from the
first ten volumes in the series. Oh, "pretty descriptive", not "pretty
deceptive".

James did not claim there was an Orbit 22. He said there were 22 volumes,
which includes The Best from Orbit.

I'm not claiming that he made such a claim; I did read the article linked.

But "I do mention a 22nd volume in passing" would tend to create the impression,
at least in the casual reader, that Orbit 22 would be that volume (even if it just
began to be prepared and was not actually published). That the 22nd volume was
instead The Best from Orbit, and that he felt he needed to mention that as a
qualification to its title... qualifies as a joke rather than a serious qualification.
