Yes, they are. I have a small anvil that I use to beat metal straight.
The anvil always wins.

My wife has a number of crafting hobbies, including jewelry and
polymer clay. Last fall she expressed an offhand desire for a 'real anvil'. The
best one she had was only a few inches long.

It's amazing what you can find on Amazon. I got her a 70 pound
anvil, a couple feet long - the heaviest I could easily move for her
by myself, as a Christmas morning surprise.

There are a surprising number of YT videos reviewing anvils.

But.... have you ever tried wrapping one to disguise it, *and*
getting it under the tree unnoticed?

I think Tex Avery determined that the proper way to present an anvil was
exactly three frames before it landed on your head...

When actually used for forging, they can also teach a lesson about
the coefficient of restitution. If you fail to hit your part with
the hammer, most of the energy you put into the hammer will still
be available as kinetic energy, going in the opposite direction,
towards your face...

I mentioned YT videos. One of the favorite 'tests' is to drop a ball
bearing on the anvil from a few feet up, and see how high it bounces.

In the late mid 20th ct there was an amazing display at the Chicago museum of science and industry: From a small hole in a wall a ball bearing falls out, hits a special angled anvil, and bounces into another small hole. All components had to be perfect for this to work. I imagined you could use it to test for Imperfect sphéricité.
